over-engineered or otherwise intriguing mechanics

I'm accustomed to Benchmade's assisted opening and Spyderco's Manix 2. What I really like about the Manix 2 is the two screws on each side at the pivot point. Neither of these are over-engineered or intriguing.

I have to think some of you guys with $1k knives have something special inside.. ?

Although I love my Manix 2, I dislike that the rear of the handle is only held together by the lanyard tube. 9 years old and mine is not tight there anymore, and rattles a bit. I'm not sure if the liner stretched or bent or the lanyard tube did, but it is annoying.

I've seen a lot of overengineered knives, but I'm at work and have no pics.

My 1K plus knives are 1) made in the US, which generally costs much more than foreign knives. 2) Use exotic materials that are expensive. 3) Handmade. So, that is the secret sauce.

Less is best IMHO; complexity means more to go wrong. Some of the best designs are the simplest --Sebenza 21, for instance; Benchmade's Axis lock (albeit it has a few more parts); the traditional lockback (Buck, among many others).

When I think about threads on this topic, some of the older Kershaws come to mind. I have a Ripcord (somewhere) that used a special belt holster that stored the knife by retracting it into the grip. When you pulled the knife handle out of the holster, a stud slid in a channel causing the blade to slide out the front. Think of it as a very slow and overly complicated single action OTF...that doesn't actually spring.

The other is their knife called the E.T. It was a pretty convoluted fidget toy that was kinda cool to play with until it bit you.

Both of those are long discontinued, but there were from back in the day when Kershaw was innovative but also a good value and largely domestic.

Wish they would make another run of them, it's a lot of fun to open and close it then hand it to a friend to figure out.
I saw one of those Protechs about 10 years ago, a range master was messing with me, showing off... 😍
It was different model with pearl looking handle scales and black bolsters and different, pointy blade, very cool looking knife
Edit: Very similar to Godson Auto Folder model.
