Over knifed?

My camping trips are really just so I can play with all my sharp toys....

Well, that's the plan anyway...

Problem is, I spend every spare cent on knives so I haven't had the cash to buy myself a decent tent :D

You pulled out three blades and she started complaining?

Next time she opens up her make up bag, ask her why she has more than one type of make up.

She should be fine with just lip stick, right?

I'm not married, but this sounds like more of an aesthetic thing than anything else.

The knives that stow away nicely are fine, but when the machete is on your belt, you look like Jungle Larry, and it doesn't fly well with her.

I don't think you're overknifed at all.

Heck, I work in a high rise in downtown Philly. In my pocket is a Vic Farmer. In my laptop bag I have a Vic Cybertool 41 and a SwissTool RS. (Yes, I drank the Victorinox Kool Aid, deeply!)

Murphy's law, my friend. I wouldn't be suprised if one day while camping your SAK breaks down, the handle of your Fiskars breaks and you need to rely on your 3th blade. It's called redundancy and in most critical applications, triple redundancy is the standard.

No harm in beeing prepared.

I tend to carry too many knives because I always have my trusty knife I have to take, then I have a couple new ones that I have to try out. But it's much easier and lighter to carry just two, maybe three. Just decide which ones you use the most.

The key is to have what you need, extras, but don't use them till you need them. I think unless I was testing something out, most of my fixed blade knives could stay in the pack. I find that one of my SAK's will do, backed up by my Charge and the hatchet or saw in the pack. I back everything I carry up with something else, but then you rarely see the extent of what I carry.

I have my LM wave/Rat-3/ BK7 or Rat-7(I alternate them)& SAK and maybe kershaw leek for camping. just hiking or trail walking RAT-3 for sure sure, I have a RTAKII that might get to go on my next adventure instead of the Rat-7/BK7.in my area I always have some fishing gear and in that gear is a uncle henry filet knife and a bear cub KOA in the tackle box .

I carry a similar set-up. I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Overknifed? No such thing. 3 is the minimum I carry on my person, being one fixed blade and two folders. Then there's the extra cutlery, machette, chainsaw and the axe.

The axe and SAK seem appropriate. In your situation what exactly was the reason for carrying the mora? Sounds like you were car camping?

I never thought I would see this many posts and about the fact we are all nuts here.:D I myself am guilty of taking alot of knives when car camping. I like to do various test on each one. So yeah, when I flip the car or SUV we are going to die by knives flying around inside the vehicle.:D Eventually the mora is going to my son( only 2 yrs) and I'm replacing it with a custom nessmuk or something along that lines.

Wabajack: Car camping for the first night only because we got there kind of late. No sense in getting hurt hiking to the site in the middle of the night.

Robert H- She was just joking and hear you on makeup thing. I always ask her why she has so many shoes that she doesn't wear. LOL

AustinTXshooter: I'm in the process of getting the pocket chain saw also to add to the weight LOL.

Ron53-I was thinking about getting the nessmuk instead of a BRKT. I only normally use the fixed blade for cutting, shaping, fire prep, and food prep. (this is only thing I can think of) If I have a hatchet I really don't baton alot. If I bring the 12" machete I baton alot.

Chrisaloia-I normally carry a sleeping bag, extra clothes, FAK, tools, and Flashlight w/lithium batts in each vehicle. So you are not the only one that does this.

I used to just carry my SAK all the time in the bush or hiking. I never needed anything else but to cut open food items, using the can opener, I use the saw alot, and small task. So do I really need to carry the mora for anything? What do you guys think? Do you think I would be better just carring a chopper and a SAK just to save the weight?
I think you've already answered your question. "I never needed anything else." Neither have I and I have on a couple occasions spent more than a month in the field living under a ponchos and a poncho liner, though my uncle was nice enough to supply food and water generally.

The Truth is, YES you are "over knifed". Basically the reason you think you need to bring so many knives is so you can use them all; thus negating your subconscious concerns that you wasted money on knives you will never actually have a specific use for. The fact that your even asking us about it pretty much proves that.

But its all good. Your having fun, so just do what i do and ignore that nagging little voice. :D

LMAO ROTF. I think that you may be right, but like you said I'm having fun. That and trying to justify the money pit of a hobby. :D

when I flip the car or SUV we are going to die by knives flying around inside the vehicle. :D:D LOL my buddy really did that he turned over his 4x4 toyota and outdoor items all over the road...I mainly laugh because everyday joe blow drive by and think look at those crazy people...axe and machete lying perfectly in the middle of a county road, tent /sleeping bag/flashlight/ fixed blade knife(Buck 102) just lying in the road, things come out of the extended cab section after 1 complete rotation , alittle speed mixed with a sharp almost 90 degree turn and seat belt on going for a ride, shaken and stirred but un-hurt so afterwards we laughed, he was solo in his adventure, I followed behind in my own ride,I think the only thing that stayed in besides him was a savage arms over /under 20ga/223 rifle combo...trip was not ruined because it happend afterwards:D Dang toyota, roof crushed and sides damaged but started an drove another 40 miles until we reached a place to have it towed home.

I am trio +1 guy. The trio is chopper, fixed blade and a folder. The plus 1 is a Leatherman. I have several threesomes; modern, budget, hunting, and primitive.

When I go out into the woods,

I always have my SOG Recon Bowie that is used for most of the work for building the shelter, ending animals lives, prepping them for eating, etc.

I have the big choppy chop that is pretty cheap but holds a decent edge for clearing brush, branches, etc.

I have the lightning OTF clipped to the front of the shoulder strap to my pack for cutting cord, rope, string only. It holds a good edge for easy stuff so it's the easiest thing to keep sharp for a specific easy job like cordage.

Then I have the microtech that I use for cooking. I get done cooking and eating, clean the blade off and put it away. It's easy to keep clean since it's an OTF, plus it's pretty much just a badass steak knife anyway.

Then in the front pouch of my sheath for the Recon Bowie, I have my Mikov auto with a saw. Also very handy for the shelter building and making stuff.

The wife used to have a good laugh at me getting ready for my camping trips, asking if i had enough knives and ammo and whatnot. Now we're getting ready to go on our first outting together into the deep woods in North Georgia for 3 days. Next thing ya know, she's over at my knife drawer picking out her chopper, workhorse, food prepper, and backup. Then she asks if I need her to throw a mag or two of .45 golden sabers in her pack or if I have enough room. It's totally different when you show them where they are going and it never hurts to make them watch Deliverance. lol

Now another thing to know though is that I don't hang all of this stuff off me decked out in camo and full BDU's complete with military patches everywhere and milspec boots and all that mall ninjaness. I usually wear a good medium weight, light kahki, cargo pants, light brown or grey t-shirt, and my tan Merrils. I also usually have a fleece or hoody tied around my waste that covers up the chopper sheath and the handle of the .45 sticking out of the inside the waste holster. Other than that stuff, everything else stays in the pack until it needs to be used. Sometimes, but very rarely, I'll brandish the SOG Recon Bowie on my side if I'm not going to be anywhere where I could possibly run into other people. I can still get to everything including the sidearm very fast, but it's not out to scare anyone or draw attention. The one thing I am guilty of is my love of the kahki boonie hat. It's always either on my head or hanging on my back. I love a good boonie hat.

Isn't it fun being overknifed though?
