Rick and I did a quicky overnighter yesterday not far from his place. It was mostly just to see what the FUG its all about (FUG is his latest personal blade) and enjoy some of the new green after a drab brown season of winter-not.

The forest had a convenient backpack washer. Just walk through, turn around, walk through again, and one more time. You are all squeaky clean afterwards!

I had my B. Andrews Bitterroot and Wildertools S-Curve...

Those are my favorite kind of knives. So much easier to carry in comparison to the 3 lbs choppers but still can compete with them.

Thanks for posting.

Nice pics and narrative. Looks like you guys had a good time - I can almost smell those good looking steaks.

The pack in picture number one - it looks like an ideal one for an overnighter. Is it a military ALICE pack? I'd like to get one like that. Thanks.

What people actually don't know is that this tree was one what Rick scaled to the top - and then battoned from the top down in order to split it for tinder.

Yeah.... he is like that.

Nice stuff Ken! I really liked the video.

What was your sleeping situation for the night? I don't want to hear about spooning and who slept in back :) Just curious if you did a tent, or a tarp, or hung from a limb by your toes :)

Can't wait for the next one.

It is an ALICE pack and I love em! Although, I've learned that my limit with them is about 25-30lbs even with the frame. I have a modified Canadian 82/US 64 jungle frame that I use for heavier loads.

I was in back and Ken shaved up real good like...

Actually, we each had a Hennessy. I had a 5C bag with a fleece liner witch worked well until my soulders and head slid out during the night and I woke up with brain-freeze.:(

What Ken forgot to mention, was that it almost turned into a survival situation when we wandered into the campground area and got lost walking the roads. As we walked and talked I lost track of where we were and the winding roads turned into what we deemed "The Vortex of Confusion". After we passed the same cluster of milkweed pods 3 times, it was time to start paying attention.:o

Dang Ken are you shoothing for 2 overnighters a mounth this year ?

Great Post !!

Nah, that trip was my only over-nighter in March. The one before that was in late Feb.

Thanks Brian. As Rick says we each did hammocks. I had a 5 oC bag with an exped downmat. It was pretty comfy. Today, my wife just gave me the exped synthmat 7 UL. Holy cow, wish I had that along. The steaks Rick brought along were amazing!

That FUG is beautiful. Are there any Adelgids up there?

Yeah, but Ken and I only like chicks, Joe.

Aren't those the little white fuzzy bugs? I don't see them around here. The groves Ken and I were in are Pine. Adelgids usually go for spruce and hemlock. They are in this area, though.

Another over-nighter with Rick? Dude you really need to do something about this crush you've got on him. I've seen pics of his wife and heard her voice on the phone, I've seen pics of you and heard your voice in the videos...I really don't think he's going to be open to the idea of making the switch :)

Awesome photos as always Ken, looks like an awesome outing. I'm really starting to get jealous, as you can tell from the above comment, about how much time you get to spend out in the bush with Rick. Hell the best I've managed is a couple of beers in the pit at Blade...

very nice pics and vid! holy moly, rick marchand is a chopping beast...i don't think i can even section that log that fast with a full-sized saw! forget about kukris, axes or choppers...i think it's just better to hit the gym for max chopping ability :D

It must be the rugged caveman look he's got going on ... when Rick was in town for the NYCKS a couple of years ago, we couldn't pull RescueRiley away from him either ;)

Rick

You crack me up. Oh and as I've been saying...urban survival really is complex...if streets didn't have names, in some cities every damned thing just looks the same, there would have been times I'd have just been screwed...

Lol, you do have a point there.

Great stuff as always Ken !

That Fug is a beast, I have to use a lanyard when chopping but that doesn't seem to be an issue for Rick !!!
