Overall feelings on the RC-5?

Come on. You know her music is catchy as hell. You can't help it. You want to change the station but you just can't. Not to mention she's hot as all get out.

You need glasses?
:D

And...I agree with you on the RC5. It is an awesome, awesome blade...but not the best tool for lots of circumstances.

For me the RC-5 is the largest in the Rat line I can carry legally in Texas.
It is a half a pound heavier but I really like that, also it is slightly longer and I like the shape of the blade and the handle , but these guys are right about the RC-4 / RC-6,
hell the IZULA I own would work for allot of what you wanna do..
and you can carry it around all the time and not freak out the cops or that little old lady in line at the store behind you.

Two of my Brothers have some Rats and turned me onto them. After messing around with theirs I was addicted.

But....
I have a couple Tops knifes that are made out of 1/4 stock, and I like those plus,
(not that I would EVER throw a $150 knife:jerkit:) it feels allot like my throwing knifes.

just my 2 cents

I initially thought I wanted the RC-5 and then some people here talked me down off the ledge. The more I think about knives, the less I feel I need a monster like the RC-5. The RC-4, however, is a different story. =)

Honestly, for the shelter building and batoning, the RC6 is the best knife for that right now in the RC line.

For MOST bushcraft tasks, like making traps, the finer kinds of work, food prep, etc, the RC3 is the winner.

Even though it's more expensive, I much prefer the RC6 over the SRK or Ka-Bar. The RC6 is the best "do-all" knife in the lineup.

IMO, to get all tasks done, you need a small knife and a big bruiser. The RC3 fits the small knife aspect well (or a SAK or other folder). The big bruiser can be a big knife, like the up coming RC10, a machete, a kukri, a hatchet, etc.

So, if you need a RAT fix, my advise would be to buy an RC3, and wait for either the RC10 or RATchete to come out. Or get an RC6, for the do-all aspect.

Lol. But I saw that "RC-5 and a lil fun" thread of making the shelter, and I am just inspired. I want something to put to use like that...

Then get an rc6. You'll be happier. I have both, the rc5 is wonderful, but for bushcraft, sliceing, food prep, chopping and splitting, the rc6 is going to be better. I'm also with Jeff on grabbing a kabar to learn with. Good, solid and inexpensive.

I also love crazy hot chicks. But you gotta get rid of them after a month or so.

Honestly, I actually want to stick with the RC-4 idea. I haven't tried ANY RAT products what so ever, and have been blabbing for 2 weeks straight on what to get. When I get the RC-4, I will be able to judge where to go from there, if I feel I want to see more, I will get the Imacasa or RC-10, because hopefully at that size they are good for chopping. Tell me something, is the RC-10 really 1/2" thick???!!! omg Busse better look out

I'm even worse. I'll be listening to the ting tings. I'll call it the RC10. It'll chime in "thats not my name!"

No, it's not that thick. :)

I agree with Dylan whole-heartedly on the RC-5. I like THIN knives. I don't pry with my blades (although I do baton) and haven't yet found the need to have a thick blade on any of my knives. For the specialized tasks that it was designed for the 5 does great. But as a civilian who doesn't need to cut himself free from an aircraft I think I'll stick with my RC-6 and machetes.

There are many knives in the same sharpened prybar category as the RC-5. The Becker Companion knife, Ranger RD4 and RD6, and some others made by the Busse companies. Most are 5" to 8" blades. These rugged camp knives are darned near unbreakable. They can do light chopping and wood splitting. Not the best slicers or bushcraft knives, but they work. They are not useless, and many folks (including AF SERE instructors) like them. Personally, even though I have quite a few of these heavy duty knives in my collection, my Swamp Rat folder and a cheap Tramontina machete see much more use.

I don't think anyone said that they were "useless". Just not the most useful knife for any of our purposes.

I was one of those asking for a RC-5 in 3/16" thickness last year, but then the SERE thing came up and they wanted a heavy knife. Thing is, I actually had fun splitting wood with the thicker RC-5. I can see why some folks really like it.

I started out with "bigger is better", then went smaller now I like to have both. 6" or bigger I keep in a pack or at camp.

Wow, that's a freakin' boat anchor where I come from :D

Jeff already made the suggestion for the SRK. It's got a really honkin' thick blade already, (about 1/4" or just shy of) so I'll second the suggestion. It was my "pound the snot out of it" knife before my RC-6 came along. :)
