How many of you carry a knife that is way too big for what you actually need it for or carry several knives when one will do the job?

I carry a Sage 2 currently and all i do i open packages on a fairly regular basis so i could get away with a lot less knife than i carry.

Pics of your overkill are also welcome :)

I carry more knife than I TYPICALLY need... but there are always times when things aren't typical, and I'd prefer to have something that can handle those less than typical days...

Who says my NEED to have a knife has anything to do with cutting stuff?

I need a knife because I feel naked if I don't have one with me...that's why I usually carry two.

I haven't run up against a knife-related job that I couldn't take care of with my Emerson Persian.
It sometimes may look like too much blade to comfortably EDC but the sinister scimitar sweep slices like few others, and the needle sharp point gets into places none of my other regular carriers can.
However I do sometimes also carry a CQC15...and always my La Griffe around my neck...and...
Uh...what was the definition of "too much" again?

I could get away with a small blade, but I like to have a little extra blade so if I need to do a big knife task I can.

I love Overkill. Have almost every album.

Oh, you mean knives!!? :D OK, then... I carried a Boker Trance, Victorinox Cybertool 34, and a Leatherman Core at once for a few months. It was just a little much. ;) Now I carry just a knife, a CS American Lawman, and sometimes the Cybertool 34 but that's if I'm on a job.

Overkill? Sure thing. I carry a medium stockman when a peanut would work just fine. :D

I usually fluctuate between 3-5 knives.
My minimum set up is one knife for fine detail work, one for food prep, and a workhorse.

The Tank Buster will occasionally fill any given spot.

As far as I'm concerned, the only overkill having to do with knives is RJ Martin's Q-36 Overkill.

I carry an SOG full size Vulcan which is probably overkill for most situations BUT... I have tried carrying sub 3" blades and they are usually too short to do the things I like to do with a knife. I can't cut my breakfast muffin in half with a 3" blade and slicing up my apple at lunch also requires something around 3.5". I cannot understand why sub 3" blades are so popular.

The (totally squirrelly) law here says I can't carry anything longer than 3-1/2", so no, no overkill. Curiously, though, it's perfectly legal for me to conceal my 3"-barrelled Smith 629, which I do on a fairly regular basis.)

normally my vic super tinker can handle it but a few times i have had to pull out my ZT302 to cut heavy duty zipties, thick rubber hose, heavy copper cable and bail-bands

Most tasks like cutting tape, trimming threads, opening letters, dismantling cardboard boxes, etc. can be accomplished easily with a pair of nail clippers and your bare hands. Add a box cutter to the mix and you're good to go for most tasks.

So, really, for most people, carrying a knife PERIOD could easily be considered overkill.

Before you grab the pitchforks and torches, just playing devil's advocate here, people!

I agree, my Victorinox Officer can handle 99% of daily cutting tasks.
It's that last 1% that keeps me on my toes.

You know the saying "it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it"...
