Covered in making 11 birdhouses for a Cubscout den... Why did I volunteer for this???

Sorry, I know its off topic. But I love doing stuff like this even if its a PITA. My shop is covered in cut out but not nailed together (Drilled pilot holes. The kiddos are just nailing them together. Which means I get all the fun cutting, drilling and sanding) It is just a slightly modified plan off the net... using pressure treated 1x6's. And yes, as much as it kills my OCD mind, there is supposed to be a gap there... for ventilation I reckon..

What? Pressure treated wood? Not 5k year old bogwood??? You would of made Burl Source a happy camper

I contemplated either a nice quilted maple, dyed and stabilized of course or maybe a burled walnut. Stabilized salvage American Chestnut would look nice too. There is a valid argument for the use of stabilized wood over pressure treated, however I find it unnecessary at the moment... At any rate I figure I will probably finish to 1000 grit and polish out with a nice oil and paste wax.

I was also looking at either carbon fiber for weight reduction, or a nice sheet of thick G10 figuring the birds would appreciate a nice and modern home, I mean, who wouldn't? My 5 year old said we should cut small pieces of carpet so the birds would have a rug inside their house...

Hah, what a gas... Thanks guys, and I am sure they will have a heck of a time putting them together. We are taking bets on how many smashed thumbs we get. Some boys are running 1:1 odds... might as well give them a rubber hammer...

Cheers!

I thought I would share this... While not anchient bog oak or curly koa... this treated pine gets some weird colors going on. I guess pressure treated I can say its stabilized, right? At least a bonus knifemaker point for that?
This has been fun and interesting. We have basically set up a mini production line.

Sorry, but I have to add... support your local boy/cub scouts. Its one of the best activities for a youngin' to do IMHO. A simple invite for a cub scout den to watch you forge will do wonders for them. And they make you feel like a rock star...:)
