A nice view point along the way

Roads still have a couple feet of snow. Makes for hard hiking when every now and again you sink to your knees. Bushwacking isn't much easier. I'll have to get some snow shoes.

Around 3ish me and the dog settled on a pretty good spot. Not good enough for a second night tho:)

Got a bit more familiar with the backwoods. Great hike

Thanks for sharing you outing! Looks like you have a good hiking companion. He shares your bed to stay warm at night?

Beautiful. I would love to be able to do weekend camp trips in a place like that. Nice looking pup also.

Thanks all!

He's great. Loves hiking doesn't stray too far. Not an aggressive bone in him. Don't have to worry about other dogs or people. He finds his own bed usually close to the fire. Loves heat

Very nice post. Great pics with the deer ! Aren't they "afraid" of coming so close? Is that common or exceptional? Basic but effective camp set-up, very similar to my usual one-day hike solution :). Thanks for sharing!

I was a bit surprised. I guess the wind was right and we were pretty quiet. I noticed the dog staring at something longer than usual.

Thanks. Wasn't hunting but if a snowshoe hare presented itself I wouldn't say no. Usually have my rifle w me when I'm out.

Sweet. Yeah, I was seeing his thin coat and thinking the cold would bother him when he wasn't active.

Great pics! Looks like a prime camp spot and some great views

Ground wasn't too great but there weren't too many bare spots to pick from. Wood was throwing lots of sparks so didn't pull out the thermarest air mattress. Didn't want to risk a puncture. No water source other than the snow. Boiled it and strained it through a coffee filter into the canteen to get rid of all the needles and debris. Glad I decided to bring the bow saw. Made it easy to keep the fire going all night. Woke up once to throw more wood on. Dog had his nose right near the embers:) it is nice country for sure. There are a couple creeks farther up that I was sorta aiming for but the going was a bit ify. If the snow got a bit softer I'd be struggling a bit going back.

Some more thoughts on the deer here... There are lots and they are used to people and cars etc. My theory is that they think of cars and traffic like a river. You can drive up pretty close but as soon as you get out they run. They will walk through your yard but are skitish. They will run if they see you or melt away if they smell you. They're like ghosts and will just appear and disappear.

Where I grew up we had mostly white-tails, but on occasion a muley-hybrid. They seemed to understand when it was danger season, and while they would take off if you were moving in the off season, if you were still or contained to a location, they'd often come out and be pretty calm, especially if you were in a familiar pattern, for example I had to pump water every afternoon, and it usually happened about the same time of day, so the deer didn't care. Drive into that area off that time, and they'd bounce.

Great location there! looked like a good time. Just spent two days on the water doing some kayak training, and staying out at a campsite. Not the same, the campsite is accessible by 4x4, so its pretty trashed up, and while there we have to follow LNT even though no one else does. Didn't pack in firewood, so no campfire this time.. would have helped with the bugs.
