I've waited about three years to use the oil lamp I made for it's intended purpose, well it certainly has been cold and snowy enough this year for it!! Buddy of mine and spent the night in it a few miles from the house. Temp last night was -10 or so with the temp inside @ +30 or better. The gallon of water wasn't even slushy in the morning.

That's something I really wanna try one day.
Nice steel choice. More on the knife combo and oil lamp please.

That place looks cozy. The video helped explain the kudlic to me as I've never heard the name before.

I don't really know much about the steel combo other than it is Carbon, Birch handled, and Finnish. They hold a good edge! These photos are from a few years back.

The lamp is made of Soapstone and could be a bit deeper, but I was just winging it when I made it. It won't burn all night and I never intended it to. I use Olive oil as fuel and cotton for the wick. The stone gets REALLY HOT, so it needs to be up off the ground.

The true masters can explain better than I.

Cool. Did you make the cave igloo style, by stacking snow blocks, or did you dig out a snow pile?

Never tried a snow cave or igloo. Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff! You've given me some extra motivation to try a snow cave shelter here in my neck of the woods -- I'm in MI and we certainly have enough of the white stuff to give it a go (plus 5-6 more inches tonight means tomorrow might be a good day for it)...

There is at times fuss about building to big, Bologna! There is little that is as nice as being able to move around and not knock snow on your sleeping gear. You will sweat, so take you time. the rewards are a blast.

Camped again last night and thought some of you might want more info on the oil lamp.
