Overnight pack recommendation

I would check out military surplus options. Sounds like you need something between 30 liters on the low end, to 50 liters on the high. Plenty of solid suggestions above; the Atmos 50 is a good bet.

Nothing even comes close to Mystery Ranch packs. They are pricey though and most people can't see the difference between them and, say, an Osprey, for example (also nice). Mystery Ranch packs are, IMO, in a league of their own and worth every penny. My overnighter is their "Sweet Pea."

Hi guys,

I'm looking for suggestions for a day pack/overnight pack. The apckwould be used while hiking, snowshoeing, and hunting. It would be good if there was a way to attach crampons, poles or snowshoes to the pack.

I think one decision you will need to make is between durability and weight. Ski edges, crampons, snow shoe bindings and general rough treatment can go through lighter fabrics more in vogue with current ultra lite goals. Not saying that ultra lite is wrong, just noting that life is full of trade-offs.

In terms of size, I use a 3800ci/60L top loading ruck sack. I find that I don't need a stay for any load I can fit into it so long as compression straps are cinched. Also don't need a full bore hip belt. A full day of climbing with skis on the pack can push that a bit, but generally I keep any extras off of the pack.

I've been using a Jandd Zoor Alpinist for nearly 20 years now. Incredibly durable pack.

Crampons can easily be carried either on the lid or the panel on the back (my pref).

I strongly dislike panel loading packs for rough use. Zippers fail and then what?

Here it is in use on Mt. Washington this summer with some side pockets added for an overnight trip.

I'm a big guy and my winter jackets are big. I'm definitely in the camp of preferring larger packs cinched down. Better than small packs with crap hanging off of them. In any event, big thumbs up on Jandd in the durability camp.

I use the REI Flash 62 for overnighters. The thing has more than enough room and weighs less than 3 lbs. If you hurry, it is actually on sale right now for $139 instead of the original $189. Great deal! Good luck.

Here it is on me when I was goofing off.

Sorry for the late reply guys. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I ended up getting a an Osprey Talon 33. I got a good deal on it and so far it's working out great. I just bought an extra set of straps to be able to attach my snowshoes. It's a bit small for an overnighter but since I got it cheap I figure I can just take the arcteryx altra 75 I already have.
