overnight w/ just my bottle holder

This is really inspiring man, makes me want to get one of those bottle holder kits together.

If one is to be lazy and doesnt want to make a shoulderstrap, where can i find a good one at a reasonable price?

Excellent trip mtwarden!!! My son now wants to plan a similar outing for both of us this summer. Good lessons learned as well...thanks for taking the plunge and sharing the tale,

thanks gents!

What style Schnee's are you wearing? The packers?

I think they call it the Guide- it's their uninsulated lace-up. I've got several of their boots, really well built :)

here's a pic of the tinder I used, crappy photo but maybe someone will recognize it :)

a little better pic of the interior of the shelter, doesn't quite do it justice but probably close to 10-12" of dried grass (on top of 4-5" of boughs)- I put some boughs on the outer portion to help an inadvertent spark from lighting the whole joint up :D

Awesome post! Kudos for taking on the PSK challenge and making it look so effortless!

maxpedition makes a 1.5" strap and a optional shoulder pad- definitely more comfy than my paracord one :)

Awesome trip, thanks for the pics:thumbup:

I used an old nylon guitar strap I had lying around. Clipped it on with a couple of carabiners.

I have the Maxpedition strap w/ the shoulder pad & it's nice but a little pricey for a strap. You can use any type of strap as long as it has some type of clip on each end (duffle bag strap, bag cooler strap...etc)
The Maxpedition bottle holder kits are Nice, my favorite go to bag ! It goes with me everytime I'm in the outdoors !

so I'm going through my kit and replacing items that were used, cleaning stuff, etc and I get to the heatsheet blanket which I figured I'm going to toss- look it over and there are a few holes in it- have seconds thoughts and decide to patch it w/ small pieces of duct tape and then it hits me- how am I ever going to get it folded up again?- it was originally the size of a deck of cards and that was half the beauty of it

well after a few tries lo and behold, I got it back into it's original packaging! :D waste not, want not

Man, defeated again. I keep one that has been unfolded in medium ziplock and keep using it for demos and such and another virgin sheet in the PSK. Never been able to get mine back that small again.

when I say a few tries, that could be as many as two dozen :D a real oragami nightmare :)

Awesome post and great pictures. Wish I had gotten in one more over-nighter before the bugs got here....

mtwarden, I was looking over this thread you started and noticed how you have your wind shirt on with your sweater over it as you layed in your shelter.
I tell ya I am so glad you posted about the wind shirt as you call it. I carry mine now in my malaga gearslinger pack which is my EDC carry pack. I have used it just like you did with your sweater twice in the last couple of weeks. Great piece of gear.

Bryan- yeah it's definitely one of the most versatile pieces of clothing I own :) because it's so thin (and light!) and nylon, didn't want to risk melting a hole in it, so I simply layered it under my wool sweater

I also used it on the way in (layered over my base layer) as the wind had picked up pretty good, just that light addition made all the difference in the world when it came to regulating temp

Hey mtwarden, great thread, thanks a lot for the pictures! I was amused to see one of our Bundeswehr folders (most soldiers call it the BW-Stumpf - roughly translates to "Bundeswehr dull", as in dull blade - because they find it very difficult to sharpen) on this forum. Where did you get it? I assume they aren't very popular in the US.

good pics let me know about the hat you wear please

thanks- it's a Filson Packer, bombproof hat :)

interesting :) I got it in a trade, it came to me pretty sharp- I put it on my strop (black and green compound) and it pops hair now :D

I see them on ebay occasionally- usually listed as German GAK (German Army Knife), often quite reasonably priced; the saw is very good, better than the Farmer which has a good saw blade; the awl is also very good

I think if more folks had access to this knife it would be more popular here

let me ask you a question :) what's your thoughts on the Bundeswehr paratrooper knife? http://www.assistedknife.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/24998/subcatid/59388/id/361518

The BW-Stumpf is an excellent little knife, very sturdy and I find it very easy to get extremely sharp. Since I talked my girlfriend into EDCing a knife, she carries one of those.

It says on the page "very collectable". Exactly my opinion. I had one of these as a kid, it's a piece of crap. I had to throw it away, OTF knives got outlawed here in 2003, But I remember that it had a wiggly blade with generous amounts of play in all directions. Crappy blade steel with an even crappier HT (I think it's 440A, RHC is about 57-60 or so) If you are into collecting Bundeswehr gear, you should consider getting it. It is very rare, but 80$ for a knife that's absolutely unusable is pretty hard. I could get it cheaper for you here in Germany but it is an illegal weapon, so not a chance. Might get lucky in Austria, though.

If you are interested in getting old but usable Bundeswehr gear, I'm sure we can get something set up. I can get all that stuff for pretty cheap here.

^ thanks, if it's a crappy knife I'll pass :) looked like a very interesting design and was contemplating looking for one- thanks for saving my hard earned $! :D
