What knives seem to be over hyped or not as advertised? Ever buy one you saw in the latest knife mag because of the slick ad and get burned?

Ya know...

I built a hundred FL-001's from Knifekits .com last month for the guys at work. They look good for the price and state the baldes are AUS8. Every one needed some fileing and reprofiling to get to work right some neede some serious work. The pivot pins will not stay togather without some serious thredlock. I have rebuilt about half so far... I guess I expected a bit too much...Like parts that fit and baldes that have an even bevel or, God forbid, a sharp edge. I don't mind refining a knife but this was a bit much.

I have to say I was severely disappointed with CS. I got one about a month or two ago and withtin a week the tip broke. I think they're WAY overrated. I may buy later on some years from now, but for now I'm not touchin em. :grumpy:

Ill second that with the cold steel. POS is the only words I can describe the folder I got.

Ah, crap. I just ordered a Recon 1... which one(s) did you guys get?

I've never been impressed with my friend's Shrade Cliphanger folder. I remember when they first came out all the hype about how great the knife was, but the lock is lame and the whole thing just feels cheap.

(Sorry if the Cliphanger has been covered before, I've only been on BladeForums for a few months. ;) )

I had forgotten about the Schrade Cliphanger, the lock failed while whittling on some green hickory. Came real close to only being able to count to nine using my hands. :D

Nobody's goona say the Dark word???

In light of the other thread going on, somebody's gotta say it...

Darkops?

flame suit on

kershaw and spyderco

never held a spyderco that I liked as much as the hype behind it. flimsy FRN and rivets makes me :(

well - you kind of have to be able to buy one to be dissapointed in it :D

I have never owned a knife that didn't live up to my pre-conceived ideas about how good it was going to be. That doesn't mean they were always great, just that they were always exactly what I expected.

The Boker Cera-Titan. Tip broke almost instantly and I find it impossible to put an edge on it no matter how long I grind on it.

thats the thing though. I will browse through the Spyderco catalog and I love everything in there, but then when i buy one I am always very let down. But I do it again a few months later.

I second the spyderco remark. I've held and handled a few and I agree; they feel cheap and I'd like to add look like the animal they're named for vomited them up or worse. :barf: I really don't see the fascination. Just my opinion though.

Psychotic delusions are not knives.

Just a suggestion - look beyond the FRN models... I don't own any of those either. Try one of the higher end models before you give up on Spyderco.

I'm waiting for a g-10 and phosphor bronze and s30v model :) I don't like nylon washers either. I know I'm picky. :)

I ordered one in november, the lock felt gritty, I could see that it was rough inside the locking area. The blade was no longer made of aus8 but of low end 440. Bottom line was that I sent it back to CS. Marcus at customer service asked why and I said " basically its a heavy POS. I got the large Voyager clip point instead. As much as I like my CS knives this may be my last CS product i'll ever buy.
I may be wrong but It seems to me that QC has gone way down...

I like the FRN Spydies, they're light, extremely hard wearing, innovatively designed for serious use - not visual appeal, use very good steal - normaly VG-10, come in a large range of shapes and sizes to suit most individuals and their work requirements, and are very well priced. These are knives designed for work and they do this very well. I can accept peoples differing views on beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder, but a knife is foremost a tool and FRN spydies are up there with the best value for money tools ( Delica, Endura, Calpso Jr can all be bought for under $40.)
