Overrated Blades

I second the spyderco remark. I've held and handled a few and I agree; they feel cheap and I'd like to add look like the animal they're named for vomited them up or worse. :barf: I really don't see the fascination. Just my opinion though.

FRN may not feel as nice as titanium but Spyderco blades cut like crazy and hold an edge.

It may just be me but I actually like the look of Spydercos. Benchmade, Kershaw, etc. all look so boring. Spydercos look...original ;)

Aside from the FRN not being that durable Spydies are hard working knives. I had an FRN endura that I kept as my EDC from the time I was 16 until I was about 23. It served quite well and my only complaint is that the steel pocket clip wore into the FRN after carrying it in my back pocket for about a year and sitting on it. The blade never failed and it saw hard use during my teen years when I worked in a furniture warehouse and used it daily. It came with me surfcasting and hiking and all the rest. The Endura is a great design, ugly or not. I wouldn't call it overhyped.

Paramillie uses PB

get out of town!

are you sure? Sal had responded in another forum and said they were experimenting with PB - but in the SS models only I thought.

I was an inch from picking up a Manix until I saw the tiny nylon washers in a picture someone took.

If someone can confirm the construction of the Paramilitary - i will have one on the way tonight.

Now and then I get one that just doesn't work for me (Spyderco Salsa is a great example). Usually it's me and my taste, handsize, whatever so I give those away (thankfully it doesn't happen often). I've only returned two knives because I was disappointed...the Loveless City Knife, which I found heavy, overhyped (yea - I bought it) and overpriced. The other was the Lum Seki-Cut "Small Encounter." That one had a poor finish and did not open smoothly. I do need to say that the Lum Chinese (Spyderco) has a fit and finish that is so good it's almost comparable to a custom.

I bought a boker ceremic knife when I read about them in all the knife magazines about 5 years back. The thing would not cut butter. tradded it after a few months

Nobody's goona say the Dark word???

In light of the other thread going on, somebody's gotta say it...

Darkops?

They would have to actually have some knives to qualify. This is not a thrad about most overblown advertising campaign :)

Be careful what you say about (Shhhhhhh) knives, the last person who whispered their name, got deanimated, the good news is, the blood spray was controlled, and the handles easily removed for decontamination. Whew, how fortunate.

I've always found CS and Spyderco to offer great value for money. I know that CS has switched to Carbon V on most fixed fixed blades and 440A on some folders, but otherwise no problemo. Btw, I asked my wife for a CS Night Force in 440A for Christmas. I like it and it works great! Yep, I would prefer AUS-8, but I'm not crying.

I think some Benchmades are overrated. I have several with liner locks and although they work fine, they don't strike me as being particularly strong.

I dont usually buy anything without either handling it or doing ALOT of research on it. It took almost 2 years of reading threads and learning about the construction of the Sebenza before I spent the money on it. A year to build my 2nd PCKS. Usually it takes a couple of months to plan out a purchase.
Right now ,I'm working on a small fixed blade purchase. By March or April, I'll have decided on one.

At the risk of being hunted down and "de-animated" , I gotta say Emerson knives. I just don't see what's so great about them.

The only Cold Steel I have ever seen that lives up to it's hype is the Bushman.

Well, with tim8557 and myself that makes 3 votes for the Boker Ceramic.

Also:

Strider (tough, but don't expect fine craftsmanship, attention to detail or to receive a new one without scratches and don't you DARE complain about any of these things either, especially on their forum! )

Emerson (Actually good knives but not $170 worth of goodness. Pick one up on Ebay or the forums for $90-110 and you'll be happy though.)

F.Beltrame and other Italian Stillettos found on bladeauctions (Better than the Chinese ones, but not by much.)

Piranha Autos (Looked and felt like a toy.)

The Schrade Cliphanger purely SUCKS. POS linerlock with a crappy shaped handle. Second to that would be the Case minitrapper that I bought at Galyans, sight unseen. Floppy blades, piss poor grinds, very mismatched scales. In general it sucked.

sorry I'm late on this thread.

Like guy g said, I do LOTS of research before I buy something, so I'm not let down. And, just like him, I've spent years researching sebbies, busses, etc. So when I get them, I know what to expect, and I'm not disappointed.

This type of research not only helps me pick good knives, but keeps me from buying a BRAND.

In other words, I don't buy a spyderco or busse because of the brand, but because that specific MODEL works for me.

Like Sting777 said, I'm not a fan of the entire spyderco line (frankly I think most of them look REALLY ugly). But my Chinook II is my most reliable EDC. Everything about it is tough, sharp, and dependable. But just because I like my chinook II doesn't mean I'm going to purchase a gunting (a knife that I'll never understand...it's so ugly!!).

Same thing with Cold Steel: I think most of their line is JUNK. But my black bear classic and XL voyager are SOLID performers. Heck, my trailmaster is the perennial beater. The flat of the blade has been used to hammer nails into my floor and it didn't show any scratches or damage. But sure as heck am not going to purchase a desperado or recon 1 from them.

So basically, do your research (this takes a while), don't buy into hype, and you won't be disappointed.
