What do you think are the ones that are overrated?

Uh-oh, I had better put my flame proof underwear on

I think the Commander and Sebenza are overrated. Dont get me wrong the Sebenza rocks, but not at $300+. The Commander is overrated to me because of qc problems.

I think I would have to agree with Shootist on both counts. Hey,does anyone have any of Herman's knives to determine whether its worth it or high end hype?

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!

Can I borrow your flame proof skivvies? I'll say the Sharpmaker 204 is overrated. It cuts slow, takes a long time to change bevel angles on something hard like your typical tactical folder, and you still have to rely on a skilled, steady hand to hold the knife at the right angle. I've got one. I get a better edge with the 204 than with a bench stone. But when it's time to pop hairs, out comes the DMT clamp.

Ouch! Dang, that's sharp!

A point of order here gents, just so I understand the ground rules of this thread.

RayField's post asks for opinions on the most overrated knives. Is "overrated" necessarily synonymous with "overpriced". We might want to clarify this before we get too far down the road to nuclear holocaust. The Sebenza is a good case in point. I've often heard folks here on the forum object to the price of a Sebbie, but I've very rarely heard that anyone was disappointed by its construction or performance. In my mind, the term overrated speaks more to claims of performance or durability that prove to be unfounded rather than an issue of perceived bang for the buck. Admittedly this is a somewhat minor distinction, but one that may prove important in the course of such a potentially volatile thread.

My wishes for a safe journey to all of those attending the Blade Show.

Hi Chiro,
You'll get no argument from me that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm only trying to avoid a common pitfall often encountered here on the forums where we find ourselves saying one thing, but meaning something else. I hope you'll agree that in a venue such as this the precise use of words is critical to sustaining an intelligent and productive discourse. BTW, I too must say that I've been pleased with all of my knife purchases in recent memory.

Emerson customs. BTW guys, please let's take this with a grain of salt. These are just someones opinions. I have a Sebbie & a Sharpmaker and I'm still smiling

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

Totally agree about Commander, donno about Sebenza, but Commander is rather "look" than #1 hard use knife.

I hate to pile on but I can see the claim of Emerson being #1 hard use as overrated simply because he always uses a form of chisel grind. His knives aregoodlooking and sturdy, i just wish some had hollow grinds so they couldbe more versatile. I do own a CQC7A and a Commander. As for the Sebenza, I will say that I carrymy small one every day, but I think that as limited production/semi-customs, Sebenzas should be judged a bit differently from mass produced knives.

Not the Sebenza.

Yes I do...

I'd like to agree with Choro and Bronco- all my recent purchases have been very satisfactory. These include BM, MT, REKAT, Kershaw, and MOD. I should also say I just use them, not abuse them.

I would have to agree with the 'happy with my purchases' post. Since signing on here I have narrowed my collection to MT, Emerson, BM, MOD, and have some customs coming. BUT, I can say with utmost certainty that Frost knives are overrated whether it be price or quality. I had 'heard' that when initially signing on here but didn't 'understand' what everyone was saying till I got rooked into going in with my brother on one of those 100 knife deals....... Aside from a couple big Bowies the rest are garbage. They cut but each had flaws in the grind or the handle. Have given a few away as tool box fodder or something to stash in a tackle box and the rest just sit. My brother still has his and has resorted to torture testing a few just for fun. So much for my 'Gee, after the sale of these knives maybe I can buy a Sebenza.' Well, I had to sell a lot more than I expected for the Sebenza but it is just as sweet as everyone said it would be. I'm with Brandon up there........ PermaGrin everytime I hold the Sebenza. Even my WIFE likes it! Now that is SCARY.

What if?

What if your words could be judged like a crime?

I would add the Umfaan to the list. If you don't keep it in the pouch it gets scratched up and loose change will dull its edge it cause it lacks a spacer. Keeping it in its pouch is pain in the ass to get it when you need it.

I think the Sharpmaker is worth every penny and not overated. This is from a man who owns an Edge Pro and a Skarb (and these are not overated either). The Sharpmaker will keep your edges sharp. It is not the tool for profiling that much is so. It is very versatile. Other devices have trouble with double sided edges or inside or recurved edges.

I hate to add more insult here but...

I had an Emerson CQC7 and dissliked it so much that I gave it away. I also found the regular slotted screws simply offensive

IMO... Ernie's basic designs are sturdy etc.. but they really need some work in the asthetics department. Maybe some polished or atleast contoured G10 scales?

Well, I think Cold Steel over-rates themselves a lot of the time. I'm also not impressed with Benchmade's ATS-34. I've had two Benchmade folders (and two butterflies), and I can't sharpen either folder worth a damn. I know it's not me, 'cause I can put a good edge on darn near anything, so it must be them. I guess I think most of the big knife companies over-rate their own products (except for Spyderco). Maybe this is a function of the marketplace.
