Overrated knives

Columbia RIVER M16-4 way over rated. i had two of them. One had a liner lock that would fail with a little tap and the other was just the oposite with sticking problems even when not opening the knife quickly. Really surprised me about these knives!

The Sebnza is the most overrated knife, and consequently quite overpriced. Most people can't discuss it very long without regressing to the sophomoric "car analogy".

I love my Sebenza. The quality of materials and workmanship are second to none. I must admit that I had my reservations about spending what I did for my large tanto sebbie, but once it arrived and I started to use it, I never regretted buying this knife. IT IS WORTH EVERY CENT

. My biggest problem is convincing my wife that I really need a small decorated Sebenza too

.

I was just wondering how many of the complaints are from people who have actually owned or used the Sebenza. As far as the thumb stud is concerned, if used correctly, you will find it very versatile and will not have a sore thumb. I open and close mine very frequently with no problems.

The tanto Sebenza has one polished scale and one sand blasted. I do find that the sandblasted side provides a much more positive grip. Scratches from keys or coins? I would never consider keeping them in the same pocket as my Sebenza, or any other fine knife. I have at least 4 - 5 pockets in most of my pants and just find another spot.

I realize that everybody is entitled to their opinions, and I respect that. I just thought I would chime in with my $.02 worth.

Just my opinion: If you do not own and use a knife you have no right to judge it. I thought the Sebenza was overpriced until I bought one. My small Sebenza will last a lifetime. You get what you pay for. I would rather buy 1 $300.00 knife that five $60.00 dollar knifes. Because my Sebenza will out live them all. My point here is that if you have never used a knife you can’t comment on it.

I would have said the Sebenza was over rated... untill I owned two. Same for CRK fixed blades... Three blades later, I see a good value. (Value includes customer service...)

Try not to confuse "over rated" with "expensive" (AKA: "more that you want to spend at the moment"...)

Kajnin, you are probably putting your thumb on top of the thumbstud. You're supposed to put it behind the thumbstud resting on the blade itself and then just push.

JoHnYKwSt, I know how to open the Sebenza. Any way I open it, it still hurts. Don't get me wrong, I love the Sebenza, I just feel that it can use a better thumb lug that's all. It's just my opinion. It's great that the Reeves actually listen to their customers and reply. I thought at first that the Reeves were just lazy and just put the Bead Blasted finished on the sebenza just for the hell of it. Well, now I know why. Oh by the way, I always wanted to ask this, are there any female Sebenza owners?

Cragola: Yes, I have a lemon BM AFCK. I'll strop a jumping wire off, but this knife will not take one anyway.

Here is a thought that might have tongues wagging.
Do companies who start small and end up big drop their standards to meet the big bulk orders from Police/Military buyers? I think my AFCK was a dudd because it has been sold on mass. Blackjack in its last days sold some duff knives. Cold Steel are great value but are they the same product as when they first started? Gerber, Case, Shrade, Boker and the rest produce a standard that is easily bettered by the smaller manufacturers and custom boys.

Over rated because they are not as good as they used to be as we have taken that kind of quality as normal. For example: Cold Steel.
Over rated because they are massed produced and corners are cut. For example: my Benchmade AFCK.
Over rated because the costs are so high to produce a few at a time. For example CR Sebs.

Over Rated: ALL NIB COLLECTORS. They cause new designs that do not work as makers pamper to them and bring out endless designes. They keep prices high.

Over Rated: All DESTRUCTION TESTS. These force manufacturers to overbuild.

The most overrated knife is....Any one I REALLY like, but can't afford!!!

Seriously, I don't think anyone can get more overrated than Cold Steel.. Just my opinion!!!

The AFCK is consistantly one of the better production knives out there. There are many that are more expensive, and many that are different... but I have yet to see one that is BETTER. Sebenza - maybe... but for the price you can get 3 AFCKs.

I just got a mini AFCK in M-2. Admitedly this is my first M-2 becaus eI never got hyped about different steels... but M-2 is actually quite different as it isnt stainless. I didnt think the AFCK could be any better. I was wrong.

Other than the AFCKs I consider the Spyderco Endura, Delica, and Native to be just fantastic... Excelent knives. These knives often get over looked because of the hype going on about other knives.

Hype sells. Thats a fact. I even fall prey to it on occasion. I think the CQC knives Emerson makes are HIGHLY over rated. They are swell blades yes - but aint that great.

Another knife that is damn good is the SOG VISION and it gets right about ZERO hype... Methinks that knife is deserving of a little hype.

I would have thought more people would think the CRKT KISS knives were over-rated. Sure, it's a new and innovative design to parr a folding knife down to its skeletal barest, but I've played with one and found that the lock doesn't hold with light lateral forces. Thank goodness I had the chance to play with it before laying down hard-earned cash for it.

Knives which I do own and feel are over-rated:
1. Maddog Frequent Flyer. Supposed to be one helluva strong composite knife, better than all the rest. I could blunt it duller than my plastic ruler by just running my fingernail over the edge.

2. Maddog MirageX EOD. Still can't get a good working edge on it, despite trying several different profiles.

3. That POS "survival knife" I bought so long ago as a kid. (described it in a previous thread on survival knives) Looked mean, had a bunch of useful looking stuff inside. Unfortunately, it's all for show. The blades are brittle, the sharpening stone is hopeless, the fishing line is too short, the waterproof matches weren't waterproof, and the candle melted in to a puddle while I was trying to light it. The only thing that worked in the whole package was the pencil. And the compass, if the blades were taken away from the body.
