...and I've got a stack of cash right now, so I'm looking for something new...
Well if this is the case, you could get exactly what you want; go custom.![]()
In light of the good advice the OP received, I thought I'd tap the hive mind for a little wisdom myself.
Looking for a GEC myself, or anything similar in the price range (<$150), with the following specs:
Not stainless
Smooth wood handle covers
Jack design with wharncliffe and spear point/slight clip point. Don't care which is the primary blade.
Bolsters only preferred but caps are ok too.
Handle between 3.5" and 4" no bigger or smaller.
STERILE BLADES
So. Does this knife exist? I like the 72 but this obviously doesn't hit every point on my list.
Thanks guys.
Side note: really been digging this latelyView attachment 479125
Bleh, Welcome from another EDCF member.
Things to keep in mind about GEC - they are a small shop and produce relatively few knives. They don't have a standard production list, though they do have several patterns that come out more often than others. But there's never a guarantee that the particular configuration of blades / covers / pattern / steel that you want will ever be available, or if was released once, that it will ever be released the same way again. At least so far in their history, almost every single run of knives has been a limited edition since I don't recall seeing many exact repeats if any.
They also do a lot of special factory orders for individual dealers, clubs, forums, and individuals, which further reduces their "general availability" production. Bottom line is, if you see something come up on their web site that you like, plan to buy it when it first comes out, or pre-order it from one of their dealers to reserve one. When they are running SFOs, they normally include a link or e-mail address of the person who placed the SFO so that you can get in touch with them for ordering information.
The other option is to subscribe to the Exchange forum here and watch it carefully. GEC knives go quickly in general, and TC Barlows go instantly at whatever price people ask.
I thought I recognized that cat! I've definitely noticed that from GEC when looking for things. I have a subscription to the exchange here, so my phone and wrist (smartwatch) alert me as soon as a thread is posted, and somehow, that was still not quick enough to score one of the 3 Charlows that have been posted in the last week. :\
I have a long pull swedged spear / pen #15 with ebony covers in the mail right now (Thanks pertinux!), but I'm still keeping a keen eye on second hand options in case that elusive Charlow becomes available before the #77 (which I have reserved) is released.
#15 Charlow (impossible to find right now, and I don't have quite a large enough stack to score one at ebay prices) - I've had 2, neither suited me for some reason, probably because of the blade shape. I'd love to score a long pull clip version.
#15 Boy's knife (Can't find a capped version with the spear) - Sarah was kind enough to sell me the one pictured earlier in this thread, and I loved it, right up until the point where I skinned it and had it made into a BEERlow by Evan. For some reason, the knife lost it's appeal. I still feel bad about this. SORRY SARAH!
#92 Eureka Jack (this is winning right now, mainly because it's available) - I talked Kitten Party out of one of these, and while I loved everything abuot the aesthetics, I wished it was about 25% bigger. It never found a steady place in my pocket.
#77 Barlow CK SFO (on the list, but I'm not typically a fan of clip blades, and they don't have long pulls in the render) - The original 77 barlows were a little thick with the 2 mains and the swedges going past the pulls always bothered me. I have had one from each run of the 77 barlows and like each better than the last. the 77 Spear is hitting all the right spots! So far, the 77 frame is my far and away favorite. The 77 BF knife is my longest surviving traditional! I bought it from Dan (Parke1) in December of last year.
S&M Heritage jack spear (not capped, no secondary blade) - I never tried one of these. I could never get over the quality issues that seem ever present on these knives.
#15 electrician's knife (only one bolster, I'm not sure how I feel about the liner lock and the saw) - ARRIVING TODAY!
I'm yet to try one of the remaining three, but the 66 and 68 are still on the list. I've decided that crown lifter knives aren't for me. I don't open enough beer outside of my kitchen to justify it.
#15 Huckleberry radio crown lifter (no long pull or swedge)
#66 white owl (not sure about size or if I'll like the bail)
#68 moose (not a fan of the large clip blade)
ZOMBIE THREAD!!
I was just google searching pictures of the GEC STREK knife and came across one of the Fremont pictures I posted here and had to click back through. It's hard to believe I've only been hanging around in these parts for about a year! Feels much longer, especially when I think about how many knives have come and gone. Now I know why my wife rolls her eyes at me so often!
As a side note, I've had nearly all of my original list pass through my hands this year. So far the 77 is the clear winner, but it may be unseated by the STREK that's arriving today. Let's revisit the list. I still really regret selling that Fremont. I replaced it with a Cocobolo, but sold that one too because it didn't sing to me the same way that Calico Bone did.![]()
Also, I'm interested to see how many people will respond with a recommendation without noticing the date or reading these last 2 replies. [emoji14]
Ha! Caught one!#68 Jack, since you like your Fremont so much. I saw the Northwoods thread on EDCF, and saw you there posting that Fremont.
No problem, I enjoyed it! If asked, I would have seriously thought this original post was 2 or 3 years ago! Thanks for doing this, Sean! It was very cool to see you "reminiscing" about knives from this past year. [emoji106][emoji106]
