Well I just cut myself for this first time since I was like 12. Was testing the lockup on my spec bump (with my finger around the handle in the path of the blade ) and it gave out under my hand pressure. Sliced me pretty good, should be ok though. I was pushing pretty hard so I don't know if I should be worried about it. I then did the spine whack test and it failed the first time, did it about 10 more times couldn't get it to fail again.

Should I send this to kershaw or is it normal? Is mine defective or is this just not a hard use lock? Thanks, I really don't want to send it back if there is nothing really wrong with it.

I've never really understood putting that much pressure on the spine of the blade. When, in a normal cutting task, would you ever apply pressure like that?

The only time I've ever had a knife lock fail, I was stabbing something I shouldn't have been stabbing and my grip was so tight I moved the liner lock over. It was a Junglee knife BTW.

I would think if you couldn't get it to happen after 10 more attempts I'd say you'd be ok to use it without sending it back to Kershaw.

Yea I think your right. I'm really kicking myself for being a dumbass right now though.

Oh and side note, I do love this lock so fluid to close just one circular motion with the thumb. People who complain about assisted's being hard to close haven't tried this one out.

You live and you learn. I don't stab stuff like that anymore either.

Over half of my EDCs are AO so my complaint is that non-AO are too easy to close. :p

I was laying on the couch opening and closing my Leek one night, and somehow my index finger ended up under the blade as I went to close it. Pushed as hard as I could right into the blade, sliced a nice angled chunk down to the finger nail. That sucked. I still don't know how I hit the blade instead of getting my finger on top.

Geez, you must have been pushing pretty hard! I have 3 Bumps, and I haven't gotten a stud lock to fail yet.

Spine whacking is dumb. DUMB. You never ever never do that action when the blade is being used.

yep i agree 100% send it to kershaw, spine whack i can understand but you should not have been able to do that by hand

Yea I did it by hand. I can make it fail every time by pushing the spine against the floor.

You think I should send it in?

Edit: On further examination it is only when the stud is aligned with a certain face down that I can make it fail. I guess that would mean that the stud is worn down on one of the faces.

OK, that may constitute a trip back to Kershaw.

I don't think I can part with it for 4 weeks :(

Do you think they would send me new studs or is that not an end user replaceable part?

Honestly there Von,
I think you should should ask them if they can send you some common sense. One shipment for testing with fingers in the way, the second shipment for telling others about it.:D

Hope you are not seriously hurt. Heal quickly, and do not be so careless.

Send it back, express your request to have it back as soon as possible (if you don't have a knife to use in the meantime.) Yes the stud-lock face hasn't worn in enough that's why it's not sitting in the groove as deeply. I do not know how to replace the stud, and I believe you can't.

Spine wack tests are really dumb because the pressure they put on a knife is far higher than what a knife would receive. Even if the lock doesnt fail with the test the knife cold be compromised and break in the real world and seriously injure you.

I hope your knife isnt busted and you heal up well. Take care of yoursef and your knives. You wouldnt hit your wife (well most arent into that anyways) or best friend on the back of your desk--your knife deserves better as well.

Hmm I did it on a phone book but I see your point. Thanks everyone in this thread, gonna send it in to Kershaw and cry for 4 weeks till it comes back good as new:D
