Mine also has a very small chamfer along the spine on each side, I thought it was there just to remove the sharp edge left after the blade was ground.

I always assumed the same reason for the chamfer. I have a 1/4" thick SJ CG that has a significant chamfer on both sides with noticeable grind striations, and the spine is satin finished (much smoother looking than the chamfers) - it is a nice looking contrast.
