The October challenge was so successfull (so far) that I decided to do another
for the month of November the chalenge is to light 20 fires utilizing only a ferro rod (no misch) and natural tinder you found in the woods (no cotton, no wax, no jute) this does not have to be a sustained fire you just need to get the tinder to ignite long enough to photo it The rub is that you can only use the same source of tinder twice, but you get kudos for having more diverse sources of tinder.....SInce all that needs to happen is the igniton of tinder than this can be done in an ashtray or small saucer in your home ( I do this all the time in my apt.)
all photos must be posted in this thread,,all those who meet the parameters will be assigned a number from which my wife will select at random at the end of the month.
The winner will receive a maxpedition bottle holder
I'm posting this now so that anyone who would like to participate has time to acquire a ferro rod, if they don't have one

Seams kind of easy John. How about you have to do it with different natural tinder each time?

I like it. Firemaking in chilly weather w/natural materials will be a great skill to hone. Getting out 20 times will be the hard part. I'm in.

I think I can muster a few around the yard. I been teaching the girls, so, do I get half a point for the ones they make?:D

I realized 2 recently that I had never thought about using for natural tinder.
hair and frayed blue jeans. Guess how I found out about the blue jeans.

I'm in forsure! Been having a blast with this months. And this is a skill I have been working on anyway.

I guess when I'm evicted for setting fires around the apartment I'll be able to keep myself warm.:D
It's time to get a good ferro rod. I usually use the cheapo magnesium bars from Harbor Freight. Any recommendations, or are they all pretty much the same?

actuall I meant to add a few things...
1st is this you must utilize natural tinder.. but you can ony use a tinder source twice
This forces you to experiment

2nd is that since all you have to do is get the tinder to ignite than it can be done in an ash tray.. you son;t need to get out into the bush to get a match size flame going

I'll edit the OP to better convey this.

Coyote physics.. Hard to beat a Light my fire swedish army model
OP edited to add clearer parameters

I favor getting a ferro rod blank and putting a handle on it myself, I can get a larger rod and sweeter handle for less money!

Here's the one I made up with a blank from Bens Backwoods, and the knife is a modded Old Hickory.

LMF Army rocks (2.0 is pretty cool), Coghlan's has a new one, ProForce is ok too, ESEE Fire Kit if you have the dough, and a couple of other sources by Knife manufacturers are a good. LMF 11-20$, Coghlan's 6$, ProForce 6$, ESEE 30$, variouse makers 15$-60$ depending on your tastes. Basically, the choices are out there. Some have better handles, and material make up, but they all make sparks. Moose

This is great timing, on my past few hikes I was trying to make a mental note of all the types of tinder around here. Finding 10 will be tough though! But I'm up for it.

I was busy focusing on other things in Oct, but Im gonna do this months......

I love using natural tinder...

John,

I'm in. would it be ok with you if I start mine a bit earlier than the 1st of November? I'm heading to St. Lawrence county in NY this weekend for 3-4 days of camping and duck hunting and it will give me some time to play around with other natural tinders. If this is not ok, I will stock pile them and work on them when i get back to suburbia next week.

Good job on putting together these "Own the skill" Threads.

Valcas that's cool withme.. just take pics but don;t post them till the 1st.. than assign each pic a date for the month of November... The month doesn;t matter to me its just the repetition

misch metal is a no-go? are we looking for the same type of starter that comes attatched to a magnesium block? I'm in either way.

I was looking for something like a swedish army fire steel...
Etiher way we're glad to have you
Submissions start tomorrow.
