Today I learned to oxy acetylene weld, It is so frikkin awesome! I welded two steel plates together with a torch and a peice of coat hanger, unbeleivable
! I have only ever done MIG, but my buddy Lee advised me that the proper way to learn to weld (
) is to learn one of the earliest ways to do so, which also happens to be one of the hardest. I didn't beleive it so he grabbed a peice of steel wire and the torch and layed down a stack of dimes
. I had to cool the peice and try to break it but it was a solid weld! Then he gave me a piece of coat hanger and the torch and showed me how to make the puddle and dip the rod, then move down the line and make the little "stack of dimes". It was very cool, and pretty tricky. I made the puddle POP atleast twice, and jumped out of my skin both times hehe. other than the excessive heat, it is a very good way to weld from very small to very large objects in steel aluminum or even cast iron. We even bend tested the piece afterwards and it was rock solid (though it looked like a flock of birds might have flown over it hehe). I also learned to braze as well, which is also neat. Not much application in the blade world, but I just thought i'd share.
