Hi guys. I got a tan flip knife from Walmart. There aren't any marks on the blade that say who really made it or what it is. Does anybody know what company makes it and what steel it is? My uncle says that I should learn about this kind of stuff so I don't waste money on junk. I think that makes sense.

I think this is the knife you're talking about. The steel is low-end chinese stainless so it won't hold a very good edge for long, handles are G-10 so that's not bad. I wouldn't say its junk you can still perform light cutting tasks with it but your uncle is right you should save up a little more and buy something you can be proud to own.

Well, I don't have a lot of money to work with. I don't have a regular job so I just earn money at random times for odd jobs. I needed to get something for now because I had another knife and left it on the dock last time we went fishing. It was gone by the time I went to look for it. The only places I've been lately that sell knives are Walmart, the flea market, and the Dollar Tree. They have some kitchen knives and this swiss army knife. I'm sure it's a fake one tho.

Any knife is better than no knife, I'm sure this will do until you can afford something better. Also you might go check out the pay it forward thread you might find someone there willing to donate a nice knife to get you started collecting. Good Luck :)

I've had that one for a few months as a cheap beater, but it has surprised me. Lot of knife for $3.97.

Those dollar specials are what I call multi function knives, my first knife was one of them. And I had another that was so bad I just threw it into the campfire.
The only Swiss army knives are made by Victorinox and wenger in Switzerland.
Those 3.99 Ozark trail knives aren't that bad and make great beater K Ives for the price.

FYI if you scroll down to the pay it forward thread, there's a knife on there right now that nobody wants. It's kind of a cheap mystery knife that just says virginia on it, but it may be decent and looks like the perfect knife to take fishing as you won't be afraid to loose a free knife.

As long as you're not there just to claim a free knife and split nobody will mind if you don't have anything of your own to offer at this time ( just pay it forward when you can ), there are some pretty good knives that need a good home being offered and I'm sure you could use one.

There was a thread a while back where those Ozark knives were reviewed and they didn't get bad results. If you do some searching you may be able to find it as it wasn't too long ago. So all in all that knife should serve you well and hold up for quite a while. Is it going to last a lifetime? No! But it should be fine for a while until you get enough funds together that you can get something a bit better.

By the way I'm sorry to hear about you losing your knife. I just lost one today and I'm sick over it.

What did you lose?

I don't know about their knives but Ozark Trail produces a fairly good family size tent and a few of their tents are fairly well made. They are not backpacking tents as they weigh too much but for family camping I think they are well built at a great price. I have had one of mine for over 20 years and it is holding up well after many campouts.

Losing your knife sucks. Mine was an old 3 bladed Case knife. I did see a video on youtube where a guy beat one of these tan knives through a log by pounding on it with another log. Is that a thing people do? I can't think of a reason not to use a hatchet or something.

They do it only to see if the knife makes it, it says nothing about the knife as there's no need to ever baton with a folder.
Hopefully yours turns out to be one of the good ones, because for the price there has to be some big variety in quality control and not all are good.

I like to find high value but low priced stuff. I've seen hundreds of videos about those Ozark Trail knives. I keep passing though. Even though it's cheap, you can save small amounts and get something much better for not a lot more. I suggest a Sanrenmu 7010 you can order online for about $12 but it takes about a month to ship from China. Kershaw has some really sweet budget blades made of the same 8cr13mov steel. I love my 7010. But it sounds like you would want something from a Walmart, so definitely check out Kershaw. They got some on clearance at the one I get stuck going to. They had Kuros for $20. Good if you like tanto blades and serrations.

I've been EDC'ing their bolstered lockback as a spare/ don't care blade.

I have gotten a couple of Buck knives (Made in China) at wally world on clearance. Got a 3 bladed stockman and a tooth pick. They are pretty decent knives, they both get into the EDC rotation. Had the stockman in my pocket today. Also found a little Gerber lockback on clearance. Not a bad little knife for less than $10. I'm a little embarassed to carry it because it is a Bear Grylls one.

Out of the three? Stockman gets the most pocket time, then the toothpick, and lastly the Gerber.

And yes i also have one of the tan lock backs. It lives at work as a beater knife.
