Hi all, hoping someone will recognize this. I've seen them around but don't know the origin. Picked it up at a junk shop and cleaned it up & re-helved it. The only marking on the head is a "P". Seems like good steel.

Thanks for any knowledge you can share on it.

That looks like a "P" from Peters Cartridge Company...but I have no clue if that's true. Anyone???

Peters Cartridge Company, before it was bought out by Remington Arms 100 years ago, made axes?
On the right side of the blade (manufacture stamps/marks tend to be located on the left side) a P could mean anything including 'Passed inspection'.

Well, it's an idea anyway. I doubt Peters ever made an axe. Rebranded and sold an axe? Maybe.

Many older axes, in fact most of the vintage European axes that have passed through my hands, have had the manufacturer stamp on the right side.

The central positioning of that "P" and the design style of it would suggest that it is more likely branding related than manufacturing process related.

Ya, got to agree with you. About all you can say is most of the time its branded on the left. Any one who has seen a few axes knows better.

I wouldn't say it's likely, but don't forget, numerous gun and ammo makers in years gone by manufactured lots of other stuff too.

Did you ever identify your axe with the p marking? Also was wondering what size handle you have it hung on. The one I got was on a 19" handle. Was thinking about putting it on a boys axe handle.

Did you ever I'd this axe?

I found one just like it. P stamped. Also very small shallow "2" stamped in the cheeks. Came on a handle painted tan-white with remnants of oval sticker on it (just the adhesive left).

Hey fellas, just wondering if you ever got anymore info on the "p"? Just got one today with a P stamp. Painted light blue (under all the rust and such)

I just picked one up on eBay along with 7 other axe heads. The “P” is on the left side and the word “TEMPERED” is on the right side. There is remnants of a “sky blue” paint in the word “TEMPERED”. It appears to be unused. I also noticed on the bottom right side of the eye, there is another “P” with a >—< symbol above it. Quite a mystery!

Got a picture ?
A lot of the TT wodslasher axes had just a letter stamped on them.
Give me a couple minutes to get one uploaded. I appreciate your responding. I feel like the axe is a Kelly or Plumb. Posting a pic in a few minutes. Stay tuned!

Here is the link to the pics of the axe head. I believe it to be either a Plumb or Kelly boy’s axe with the original haft. It was bowed badly and the kerf was filled with screws and fencing staples. I used a soft wood wedge to try and fill some gaps left by them. After a second clamp and heating with a torch (cringe), one side of the haft had gotten darker than I had wanted. But instead of making it match, I left the opposing side the way it was. I took a wire wheel to the edge and honed it on some leather. The right shoulder had a chunk of wood out of it, so I cut a piece of filler and glued/clamped it into place. Coat of oil and 5 coats of wax later, it’s done. The haft makes it a non-performer, but if it’s all original and a woodslasher or Plumb, I’ll gladly retire it due to only having $10 invested.

BTW, the head does not have any ridges.
