Is there a cheaper quench oil that might be a little more abundant than P50, for quenching 1080?

It is true that canola oil could be used. You should be able to get decent results. You may find it works better to preheat the oil a bit; personally I have not used canola so perhaps someone who does will chime in with their method.

We've been having good results with Houghton Quench K on all except 1095. It's fine for 1/8 blades in 1095, but not fast enough for thicker sections.

When we were using canola, we had good results with O1 and with 1075/1080 in 1/8" thickness.

I have 4 feet of 1080 coming from Kelly Cupples. That should be enough to figure things out with canola.

My next question then is, will canola still allow a hamon to form if I'm using satanite?
