A guy from my forums was kind enough to offer his custom built P7 (a relatively new LED) Mag for a passaround several months back. He sent it to me, and it sat in my room for quite a while. I tried it out with alkaline batteries, and while it looked good for a single LED, I knew the P7 was capable of much more.

My excuse for the long delay is that I was waiting two of those months for some NiMh D batteries that I ordered, but I am retarded and forgot about a very obvious solution. I used a set of Eneloops in D adapters, and the results were awesome.

Here are the shots at a wall about 20' away:

Here is the P7 Mag with 3 of the alkalines from the stock Mag:

And here is the P7 Mag with those Eneloops:

BOOM!

That's a heck of an improvement, huh? I'm glad I hung on to it long enough to test it with some NiMh batteries, because I was kind of bummed about how it performed with alkalines. I was expecting something along the lines of my HID, and did not get that until I popped in the Eneloops.

Here are some more shots, this time up in the air at some trees maybe 100' away. Luckily, the weather around here thinks we are in Seattle, so there was plenty of humidity in the air from all the rain to help flesh out the beams.

Pretty neat, huh?

Some technical notes:

-The P7 pics on the brick wall are actually slightly color adjusted, since they did not accurately represent the colors that I saw. These shots are awfully close to what the actual colors were, so you can see how nice a P7 can render colors. The three air shots are all at the same white balance.
-First shot is a 4 x D MagLite with fresh alkalines at ~1.56V each, with a fresh bulb. The light is actually brand new also, so everything is fresh. I didn't have an unmodded 3 x D Mag to compare to the P7 Mag (again, sorry).
-The Eneloops were fresh of the charger at ~1.4V each.
-Brick wall shots were shot in full manual, f5.6 1/10.
-Air shots were also in full manual, f5.6 1 sec.
-Both sets were ISO 800.
-The Mag beams were focused as tight as I could get them.

Dang, lookin crazy bright. It really is amazing what a difference those Eneloops make. I am so glad I picked mine up. Out of curiosity, about how many lumens output is that? I have a RoP that is quite a beast and a lot of fun to take outside. They look comparable.

The P7 is rated at 900 lumens, but I don't think this one is quite there. I would say 500-600, based on other lights I have.

The nice thing about this one is it will actually get some decent runtimes, especially if I put D sized NiMh batteries in there.

Wow that is quite the light, I thought 225 from my TK-10 was impressive. Whats the general price tag on these things, I've looked at Polarion and Microfire HID lights, but man they are pricy. The Pila GL models are nice too, but I just cant decide.

I got a question for ya, Are you like me? Now you can never just get a light bright enough:D

There is a guy over on CPF selling basically the same thing for $100. There are some crappy lights using the P7 you get can from dealextreme.com and kaidomain.com for under $50, but the reviews are mixed. The high end Chinese flashlight companies have ones that are around $100-150 using the P7 and reflectors specifically made for the P7, which is very nice. If you want to do one like above yourself, you need the Mag, a heat sink ($20?), and the P7 ($30) plus wires, solder, etc.

I have a Wolf Eyes Boxer 123X HID, and it is sweet. I keep on needing money and wanting to sell it, but I can never bring myself to do it. That thing is just too much fun in a relatively little light. I have a big Sams HID light that is around 2600 lumens that is fun to play with on dark nights as well. I'm working on a modded Mag that will be around 4000 lumens, if I can ever manage to get the last parts for it. So the answer is yes, they are never bright enough. :)
