Hi Folks,

Here are some pictures of what I've been up to the last few weeks. This is my first time teaching someone to forge a knife and this is the first knife Colin has ever made....two firsts in one post. we came up with a prototype chopper called the PA Backwoods. It was a blast teaching Colin, a fine young fellow who lives near by.

Hope You Like,

Bob,

Hershey, PA

After we forged up the blade, we ground out the profile a bit and gave the knife a full tapered tang. Colin did most of the tapering by himself. I cut the plunge lines for him though.

After the blade was ground to shape, we normalized 3 times it before heat treating. The dogs were bored as you can probably see.

What's that handle thing you're using to hold the blank while grinding? A magnet?

You're in Hershey? That's awesome. I live in Harrisburg and work in Hershey. I didn't know there were any makers around here.

Right before we quenched the blade, Colin added some nice file work to the spine in homage to the great M.S. Daniel Winkler.

After Tempering Colin sanded the blade to a 600 grit finish. He also gave the handle a 400 grit finish, not a scratch to be found.

wulfshrunting,

Yes, that is a strong magnet with a handle attached. Makes grinding tapers sooo.....much easier. I picked up for about $6 or $7 down at the 2nd Annual Great Smoky Mountain Hammer-Inn, held at Haywood Community College, NC.

I don't know how I ever got along without it.

Oh Ya, forgot to say that the Birdseye Maple came from Mike Jones....beautiful stuff Mike.

Thanks for sharing the pics of the Shorthairs, Bobby. Great dogs. We had two when I hunted.

Bruce, that's a nice looking Setter on your homepage, too!

fitzo,

Thanks for the comments on my pups.....we love them a bunch.

birdog4,

They do have tails, all be it short little ones. ha ha

Yep, huntin' dogs is special! I especially like to torment them guys who hunt the dogs with pink noses and no tails.(BOG)
Thanks Fitz.
Bobby, teaching always makes your own work better. Good job!

That knife looks great! I think the handle turned out very nicely. When I looked at the pictures I couldn't tell what kind of wood it was, and with the stain, it was just more complicating :p

Why isn't this knife on your blog!?
