Anyone have any of the knives made by Benchmade when they were called
Pacific Cutlery? I have the Timba model pictured below. Anyone know what steel was used? Also, was it bead blasted?

Nice pictures guys. Bob I believe that model is a 983?

Anyone else have any Pacific Cutlery knives? There's much less than I thought there'd be

A photo of an old catalog I have says "specially formulated, 400 series stainless steel, hardened to 57-59 RC". If the knife was made in Japan, and my guess is that it was, my guess would be AUS-6, or possibly AUS-8. If it was made in the USA, most likely it was 440A or Gin-1 (A.K.A. G-2). Those were the most common 'flavors of steel' of that time period.

Regards,
3G

Edit: The information I gave was for the Delta model, not the Timba. The Timba's ad copy just says "stainless steel", though my guess is it was probably the same for both knives.

Yep, at least according to the box label.

I'm surprised too. Although long discontinued, they were common on the secondary market a few years ago.

hmmm. I'm pretty sure my grandfather has one that was before they were Pacific Cutlery. Back when they were Balisong USA, when Jody was doing most of the designs. I'll have to go see him and take some pictures of it.

I have a Pacific Cutlery Kuzan Oda Tanto. It doesn't look like most tantos more like a clip point to me. It is very strong , bead blasted, with a rubber scale. I like the knife but the sheath sucks. I have no clue what metal it is other than stainless.

I have one of those Timba knives with the sawback on it...essentially the same as the opening pic (just with a sawback). I've been wondering what kind of steel they were using in that knife...

I have no idea myself, it's only marked Pacific Cutlery on the one side and Sampson on the other.
