Pacific Salt bit me; Darwin Award nomination!

Lance,

Glad you're ok. By this rate of near calls (recent reef incident or near incident), I'd suggest taking a step back, re-assess and find the trend. You'd need to reverse the trend.

Agree it's the best selfie :)

There might be a point here...the odds of stabbing yourself in the face with a knife, after nearly being pulled into a reef...after just previously being nearly pulled into a reef are probably VERY slim.

Ever thought of buying a lottery ticket? ROFL

Glad to hear you survived Lance. I have had some close calls with blades in a similar motion to what you described. I can tell you from experience, put the knife down first.

Bummer. I have stopped myself from doing stuff like that when I was sitting watching tv and sharpening.

That picture makes you look like Roger Daltrey.

best

Meh, I've been surfing forever, so reef and I are old friends. Nothing new going on there. In fact, I left plenty of skin on y'all's reefs over there in Bali last month. Indonesia has some exceptionally razor sharp reefs!

Ok though, I'd agree I need to stop stabbing myself in the head. There's really no future in that. :)

Glad you're okay, Lance.

Here's a wild thought, put the knife down before you scratch your head.

Just saying.....

Good to hear everything is all right.

Once I was practicing with a very old, heavy (and sharpened fairly nicely) steel-bladed, Chinese double-edged sword, and negligently swung the blade up and hit myself right next to my eye, near the temple. It was at the tip of the blade, but luckily the "flat" of the blade, not edge-on. It didn't break skin, but I felt the beginnings of that sharpened edge scrape me there. The weight of it also resulted in a semi-hard blow. That scared me, because it could have been MUCH worse.

Hey, most of us have done some stupid things with knives before. I know I have, but I'm to embarrassed to speak of them:p

Glad you didn't get your eye !

Well, I'm glad someone can at least relate. It's just such an instinctual move sometimes to scratch or sneeze or whatever...if you aren't careful you can make that instinctual move before you "remember" that u have a knife in your hand.

It sounds retarded when someone actually admits to doing it but I'd wager this could happen to any of us on an off day. I laughed at myself harder than anyone but the truth is I'm lucky I didn't hit my eye and there's definitely a lesson to be learned. Knife down, then scratch. ;)

I did something similar with my first-ever knife purchase. It was a Kershaw Chive, IIRC. A buddy and I drove to the knife shop together... As we were leaving (he was driving), I flicked the knife open just as he made a quick left turn. The knife fell out of my hand and stabbed me in the leg.

Keep on living man! I always enjoy your fishing tales and self deprecating stories, it has brought a smile to my face more than once. I seem to recall you getting a treble hook stuck in your head not too long ago as well. Reminds me of that scene in Jaws when Dr. Hooper and Quint are comparing scars, you may have them both beat. :D

Sharpening my se pacific salt on the sharpmaker today and had it just about face shaving sharp when I got an itch on my temple and reached up with the knife in my hand to scratch with the back of my wrist. (Umm, probably not a great idea in hindsight) I'm honestly not sure exactly how it happened but my hand somehow hit the bill of my cap and my wrist turned and I stabbed myself in the forhead! Hehe. I hate to admit to doing something this stupid but whatever. So yeah, I stabbed myself in the face with my own knife. That is all. :)
