Pacific Salt eats pacific mackerel

I use a Plain edge Salt 2. I was disappointed with its edge holding and read that the SE was far better for that.

H1 is a bit soft, but is work hardened. It wasn't a night/day difference, but I've noticed edge retention going up with more use and sharpening. Additionally, H1 might require a bit more frequent sharpening than others, but certainly not to the point that I had to sharpen it during use.

Sorry but that is not correct.

I believe the misinformation comes from people misinterpreting this:

H1 is a precipitation-hardened alloy. And yes, it is also work-hardened. Meaning that anything that you do that causes heat through friction will harden the steel further; it’s also important to note that tests have shown that it does not become brittle. The work-hardened properties of H1 have been proven by analysis independently performed by Crucible Specialty Metals. It is this that explains why an H1 blade with a SpyderEdge has better edge retention than it's PlainEdge counterpart. In the end, the analysis from Crucible found the Rc at the spine was 58, however at the edge it had increased in both the PlainEdge (to 65 Rc) and the SpyderEdge (to 68 Rc).

The Salt Series knives are being made and promoted to a market where corrosion resistance is important.

So, is H1 possibly just another flavor-of-the-month? Possibly, but hype can only go so far.

The amount of energy required for any work hardening to take place is far more then what we as a human being can generate.

IMO the performance increase you experience is a result of removing any damaged metal from the edge that might have been caused during the manufacturing process.

You're probably right. And thanks for the interesting read. Maybe some placebo effects took place, but I used a WSKTS sharpener with 6000 grit belt. The blade did get pretty warm, but no sparks as it's a honing belt. I don't have any means to test RC at the edge, but I'm pretty sure it would take a very long time to replicate that by free hand sharpening.

Nice Catch! I am in Heredia right now leaving Saturday, If you hurry you could make me some tacos:)

Really? What the hell u doing in heredia?? U work down here or something? Come on down to the beach sometime, my girl manages a bunch of oceanfront condos here.

Man, you are one helluva fisherman. I love your action shots. Come to Georgia, and we will go hunting.... I could use the good luck.:)

Not really much opportunity for "jobs" in the traditional sense. There is a lot of investment opportunity, but you have to get here with a pretty good bankroll. Costa Rica is not the "cheap place to live" it was when I got here. My best advice is come spend some time here. Reality often differs greatly from our fantasies. :-). I like it, but it's definitely not for everyone.

I am here on business. My company opened a shared services center last year and I am doing some training. Have to head to SJO tomorrow at 5am so I won't have any opportunity to do any sort of sight seeing. I will continue to live vicariously though your posts though:)

Hehe, ok, well stay tuned cuz I'm about to start a new thread and tell a new spyderco fishing story...
