pack rat

Just thought I would toss out an update.

First real chance to get on the pc since I have been out here. Dad keeps me hopping. Either out hunting or odd jobs around the place that he can no longer handle.

Has been lots of Deer, but no racks worthy of shooting as yet. Deer quantity doesn't seem to be as many as previous years and quality on some is poor. I figure the drought conditions out here have contributed to that.

We have one canyon that has always has a small flowing seep. I need to venture into it on the 4 wheeler and check to see if it has gone dry. We have a well on the place and a 325 gallon plastic tank on its own trailer that we haul water around over the place and fill vats. Have watched many of the deer drink from them as well as some Turkey.

My score so far has bee a turkey gobbler yesterday morning. Had about a 5 inch beard so I figure a 2 year old bird. Then in the afternoon hunt I watched 5 gobblers come to one of the water vats and drink and graze about an hour.

One had what looked to be an 8 or 9 inch beard. I let them pass having just taken one that morning. For those that don't know...the beard is considered trophy on a gobbler. In these parts from what I can tell a 10 to 11 inch beard is considered throphy. Word is when they get that length they then drag the ground and wear off. Dad and I have a few in that length.

Jeff,,,wish I would have known you were hunting at London. Maybe I missed that somewhere. You are just up the road aways. 20 miles give or take. Mom and Dad go to church there.

No one has taken a deer yet. Son in law bagged two javelina a few minutes apart. They will be ground up with some venison and made into sausage.
Big one hit 50 pounds and smaller one 35.

I have lost a 470 and a 110 since I have been here. Son in law tried out the 470 on the hogs so last I have seen of it :D ... Then Dad was carrying some garbage rostfrei or whatever around on a roap since he wears jump suits with no belt. So now he has a 110 on that roap, but in one of my vertical/horzontal carry nylon sheaths. I will bring him a differen't sheath and retrieve the v/h one. No biggie on the 470 as I had 3 more in moms knife drawer. The 110 was a new Idaho but didn't bother trying to explain that to Dad.

son in law didn't do his sharpening homework before coming out and the 110 he started on the hogs with was in sad shape. I was carrying a 560 in a vertical sheath at the time and offered it up in lieu of digging out a sharp 110 buried in the truck.

Made sure he knew In the words of the famous Mexican phlisopher Nacho Dorito. Thats NACHO 560.

We have seen several head of the Exotic Axis deer less than two miles from our little piece of ground. Maybe they will migrate on up to our place.

Today and tomorrow was/are Dr visit days for the folks so back to the hunting on Friday am. Maybe it will be better as a cold front is supposed to hit Friday.

Oh,,,one bit of strangeness. I had a Doe come out Sunday morning with a spotted fawn tagging along. That is strange in that this is totally the wrong time of the year for spotted fawns. Thats supposed to happen back in the late spring early summer. A definite Bambi. First time we have ever seen one this late in the year.

Am glad the Buck sale thing is up and running. If I was home I would stick something in it and offer the junker rostfrie thing Dad was using as a consolation prize.

Just got back from the deer lease. Got to use my 119,Vanguard,110 from
last year's wal-mart, and 103. I like them all.

Pack Rat, yes we are about 3 miles from down town London.Sounds like
the same hunt we had.The anterler growth was not to good this year.A
lot of hunters disapointed. Out of 11 hunters we got 6 bucks opening weekend.
Nothing to crow about. Also 2 Gobblers. I got a 8 point Monday morning.
Got to use all 4 buck knives I bought this year.

EEE, How did you make out behind the old iron bridge?
