Pack Saw

No, but it looks cool.

I just use a Gerber folding saw. It's been great, had it for years.

Your link doesn't seem to be working for me

edit: oh whoops... you gotta click on "Packsaw Combination Set" at the bottom right

That saw looks very neat but I've never used one. I think I remember seeing in the W&SS some that had one. He loved it until the aluminum frame cave way undeer stress and the tensioner pulled through its mounting hole. Let me repeat, I think I remember this.

That said, I have used a folding saw similiar to a Gerber/Fiskars and I liked it very much. They are compact and are easy to use. They don't take much time to unpack, just flip it open, and bite well into limbs and such. The only problem that I ran into is the relatively short stroke of the blade but all pack saws share this.

I also have a pocket chainsaw. This is a little terror on wood. It is very compact and can fit easily inside the space of a tuna can, the small ones. The saw cuts in both directions but because of this it can be exhausting. The other drawback is that the handles are quite bulky but any sturdy stick will suffice.

Saws of that design (with the triangular frame) All have a common failing. Very little saw depth toward the front of the stroke.

I use a pocket chainsaw which I fit up into a frame saw in the field.

The other best option is a fiolding backpacking saw such as those made by Silky; Fiskars and Gerber.

Interesting looking saw. I wonder what it weighs in at. I have a sawvivor that is superb, weighs 15.3 oz and I think was $25 as a comparison.

I used a similar style Sven saw for many years. They are decent but depth of cut is an issue as mentioned previously. I now use a Silky folder and am totally hooked. It sets up faster and cuts much faster. I have a Gomboy with medium blade, which is a pretty good sized pack saw, but am also looking to get a smaller version for light hikes or pocket carry.

I use a silky pocket boy and find it zips through all our Aussie hardwood with ease.

I got a Bahco folding saw a little while ago and I like it. I think I'd prefer it over one of the smaller folding bow saws like the Sven, just because of the aformentioned limited cutting depth, though I don't have much experience with the breakdown saws.

I have a Kershaw, which is basically the Bahco.

Great saw, period, but incredible for backpacking.

Goes through wood like butter!

I'm lazy. I just tie a 30 inch bowsaw to the outside of my pack. Cheap, and no real compromises to deal with.
