Packing a large axe

Last weekend at my campsite, there were some 4" logs in the fire pit. All I had was an SAK and a Mora. It was warm, so I didn't need a fire, but I thought about what tool would be best to split those suckers open for a nice fire. With some time and effort, I could have made wedges and used the Mora. If I had my hatchet, 3 blows along the side should do it. A 3/4 size axe should take care of it with one blow. My true flight thrower could probably baton through it with some effort. So, it comes down to how much time you want to spend doing fire prep vs. weight you want to carry. If I didn't want to mess around, I think a 3/4 axe would be the ticket.

I love axes, and as such prefer to have one with me in the bush if I will be in one spot for more than a quick tea break.

I wish I could say that I backpack with this little number, but after breaking my legs I'm a bit of a wuss!

I've packed this hewing axe a time or two- the short handle makes packing it easier, and the heavy head means I do less work (I have extensively used the Hewing axe in the first picture-4th handle so far- and love using them for chopping). Not for everybody but works for me.

Last year I hunted from a tent in conditions hovering around freezing, and decided to try out this Tomahawk that I bought from the 80 year old gentleman who forged it. I added the handle, and was very happy with how well it worked for me. The wrap loosened but that is no biggie as it was the first time I've done a handle wrap, or used one. I am including it here as it is larger than any other hawk I have, but it wasn't bad carried through a belt outside of my coat.

The funny thing is that I love heavy axes, but with knives I like thinner/lighter choppers- like my Koyote Leuko!

I've never had to cut wood while car camping. I brought it cut. When backpacking you usually aren't cutting alot of wood either. At the ranch a chainsaw or full size axe is no biggie. The truck carries it.
