packs

Just to offer something different, how about something from the Karrimor Sabre range? You might see British soldiers with them, they're issued to our Special Forces.

I've got a Kifaru Xray and it's great, before that I had a Maxpedition Condor II and the difference between the 2 is like night and day.

Would you please expand on this a little, what where the differences? Fit, organization, adjustment, or...?

I know that I am not who you asked but I have several items from both Maxpedition and Kifaru.

The Kifaru Xray has great suspension designs that really help distribute the weight of the pack. The Condor II does not. The Kifaru will be more comfortable to carry, especially with some weight in the packs. I can not emphasize the difference enough. Kifaru wins hands down in the comfort category.

The fit of the Xray will be very adjustable so that it fits YOUR body. The Condor will have some adjustments in the straps.

Both have good organization. The Xray has the best organization features of any Kifaru pack. Maxpedition always builds great organization features into all it's gear.

You will find that the Maxpedition bag, while well built, will not stack up to Kifaru's build quality. Given the price difference, this shouldn't be surprising.

Maxpedition has a decent warranty and their customer service is decent. Kifaru has a great warranty and their customer service is legendary.

Kifaru uses 1000D Cordura nylon which is a great fabric. Maxpedition uses 1000D ballistic nylon which is quite good too, though much more stiff.

If you look at price alone, the Maxpedition bag is quite attractive. But when you take into account all factors, the Kifaru bags are worth a look. My Maxpedition bags serve me well. My Kifaru bags are like old friends.

The carry issues is the exact issue I had. I still have the condorII in the car as a GHB and have carried it almost 20 miles loaded as it sits now, but for winter usage it blows balls... IE a big ball of crap digging into your pack. My first Kifaru order (2 MolleExpresse) have a Mar14th est date, the Koala has a Apr 19th date... I already own a EMR and have carried more than a care to in it while still being comfortable. Soon as the taxes come Ill be placing the Paratipi with small stove order and paying off the rest of the outdoors firearm since right now it is a 45 and after a run in with a huge moose during the elk hunt (not hunting just support so I had NO big cal on me) I have wanted something bigger. The new handgun fits the bill for anything in N America pretty well. When the smaller Kifarus get in Ill post up a review here after the maiden voyage.

Wow! Reading this post sure makes me glad that I just ordered a Navigator and can't wait to get it and give it a try. Y'all are right about Mel, He had given me a lot of good advice and answered the ton of questions I asked. Angie is great to talk to as well! Anyway, I will give a report on the pack and how it handles the Florida climate when I can.

Mattew, thanks much for the in-depth comparison. I welcome help from wherever it comes.

I have a Condor which I've only experimented with so far, and have been happy with how comfortable it is to wear, at least in relatively short durations. If the Kifaru is that much better, it must really good.

I swear, finding the "perfect bag" is almost as hard as finding the "perfect knife", and just about as impossible. :)

If you pack smart, the Condor will serve you well. It is a well made and well designed pack. You will really see the difference when you heavily load the pack or carry items that have odd shapes. Packs that do not have suspension systems (all packs, not just Maxpedition) will take on the shape of what they are carrying. If load your Condor with a bunch of bulky items you will find that it will begin to take on a "ball" shape. This can be pretty uncomfortable over time.

Packs with well designed suspensions help the pack retain its shape as well as distribute the weight of the pack to the hips instead of the shoulders. That last part is key for carrying heavy loads comfortably. The weight should be on the hips. The only way that can be accomplished is the use of a properly sized pack with a proper waist belt like Kifaru, Mystery Ranch, Kelty, and many others.
