page help

I think its coming along nicely. The only suggestion I would make is for better photos. There are a few things that will make your website standout..... those being a simple layout that is easy to navigate, load quickly (remember, not everyone has high speed internet, and those who are on dial-up will get frustrated and leave if your site takes too long to load. Also, the size of your website should be set up to look correct on a 15" monitor because not every has larger monitors)

I mentioned the photos because that is the main thrust of what we are showing. Photos of your work MUST be the absolute best. Pictures with shadows or poor lighting will turn folks off. The more detail, the better.

I've played with a bunch of different website building software, and have even tried at times to make my website "flashy" just because I thought it looked "cool". However, after talking with Alex Whetsell at Atlanta Virtual, he talked me out of it for the reasons I mentioned above.

I built my entire website with Netscape Composer. Its a feature of the Netscape browsers between versions 4.8 and 7.2. The other Netscape browsers have Composer, but it became so cluttered and hard to use that I have stuck with the two versions I mentioned. As you learn more about building a website, you'll find all kinds of useful free stuff on the net. Don't be afraid to try some of it. One final thing that I think is very important is to have a direct FTP to your web host. That way you control what, and when things get changed or posted. I hated the idea of someone else working on my website, and having to wait days or weeks for a new knife to be posted or a change to be made.

I'd suggest that before you get the web site too far along, that you switch from using frames to using tables to separate the various sections on each page.

Frames are mostly frowned upon by web site builders. They are a little harder to navigate since you have to scroll down on the main page, and on the link bar, etc.

Look into using a master template for your site which separates your pages into a header, side navigation bar, and a footer using a tablular format. Then your header, side navigation bar, and footer can be "inserted" into each page using Server Side Includes (SSI's). It may sound complicated, but it will greatly simplify your website if it goes beyond a couple of pages. The header, navigation bars, footers, etc are kept in one file, and can be edited site-wide by only changing one file.

Good luck,
