Greetings all,
I hit an estate sale on the way home for lunch today. Saw a hard cover version of Joy of Cooking, with the authors being Irma S. Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker. The acknowledgments indicate that Marion is Ethan's mother. I haven't gotten a chance to peruse the book yet, but it looks incredible in scope, and I look forward to a more detailed read.

I'm hoping Ethan chimes in here, curious to see what version I have.

Joy of Cooking was probably the only money spent on Becker goods that kept me out of the doghouse with the misses, haha.

I think it may specify the version on one of the first few pages.

I can personally recommend the gumbo recipe (out of the most current edition) it's fantastic

As of today no Joy's of cooking here
But maybe Ethan send me a signed copy
after reading here
Sounds like a 1st version as a hard copy but WTF do I know
hey got the book so another excuse to grab a BK1 page #48
All carrots process better with a BK1

Hey Mongo, can you post up a picture of the book? Personally I have a 1977 edition along with a 75th anniversary edition.

If you check out the Joy of Cooking website, and look at "All about Joy" and then "The Book" tab, it really depicts what the different editions look like.

It would be one of the later ones if it mentions Ethan. I think I have all of them except the very first one. Pics would help.

These are my two oldest. Note: The oldest of the two is The Joy of Cooking. Every other one I've seen dropped the The.

What's the publishing date on those?

Thanks for the link Critter! I left the book at work, but it doesn't look like any of the ones pictured. Closest to the '64 I guess. I'll report back on Monday....

It looks very similar to the '75 edition, except it doesn't have the yellow circle that says 75th edition, and has four lines of written stuff under Cooking. It has "Newly revised and expanded" as the second line.

I just found the same edition a few weeks ago.

I know I have one that is a priceless edition.

It belonged to my mother and was omnipresent in our kitchen growing up. The binding is coming apart. It has stains on some pages. Notes written in the margins, and full of the most important ingredient in any good cook's kitchen... lots and lots of LOVE.

Thanks Mom. Love you and miss you.

Can you post a pic....?.... E

Not sure if you meant me, but please, come into my kitchen!

First, we'll start at what I refer to as my inspiration nook.

Inspiration, because I seldom follow a recipe exactly. Which is why I don't bake often. Baking is too much science and I've learned the hard way not to tinker or I'll mess it up. LOL. In the nook are cookbooks from my Maternal Grandparents who both cooked, Paternal Grandmother, Mom, Dad, my wife's Mom, and a few we've added or been given along the way. Everything from American, to Chinese, French, German, and a healthy collection of Junior League and special event cookbooks from around the country. Look carefully and you'll see some interesting cookbooks in there.

Next is a shot of my two copies of Joy of Cooking in our kitchen. Our paperback edition we got as a wedding present on the left, and Mom's hardback copy on the right. Extra credit if you can identify the two anomalies of our kitchen design in the photo.

Yes, it's showing it's age and experience.

Mom made some notes in the margins and headers, but mostly just stuffed it with notes on scrap paper.

Ooops, looks like I leaked Mom's favorite curry party recipe. It was served like a salad bar.

I believe that would be you mentioned in the dedication Uncle E.

Thanks for visiting. Next time I hope you'll stay for something to eat. Smoking meats is my specialty.
