What is everyones opinions about the difference between a side mounted and top mounted burner?

From what I have read side mounted wont heat up your burner tip so bad, but it seems to me a top burner would heat the piece more evenly since its not blowing on one side more than the other.

I have my burner hole at about 2 o clock. When I made the forge, I used a pencil to flare the hole toward the ceiling. It heats nice and even. I also keep my torch tip about 1/2 in from burner hole.

do you stand the blade up or lay it down?? I just imagine a standing blade blocking the swirl. but at the same time imagine a layed down blade only heating on one side. grrrr I just need to win the lottery and buy a HT kiln lol.

I would build it with the can on it's side and the burner entering at a tangent to the inside of the insulating liner. That gives a nice swirl inside the forge and doesn't have direct flame onto the blade.

Add small ceramic rods on the floor to keep a flat blade off the Bottom if you want it to circulate more.

I lay down my blades, either all the way in or have the handle lay on the opening. My door opening is slightly higher than the floor,so if I lay the handle on the opening there is a gap between the blade and the floor. I also cut a V notch at opening to stand the blades up,but I haven't used it. You will be surprised how well it can work. I preheat the forge for 2 minutes, then put my blade in. I get an nice even heat on O1 to non magnetic in just a few minutes.
