Painting a knife clip (UPDATED with pictures)

Funny. I am in the process of taking the paint off of my Spyderco clips. If I did put paint on, it would be gray.

Update... This is the finished project.

Combined some of the advice I found above.

I primed with 120 grit sandpaper and used a degreasing agent. I decided I had to pass on the primer paint which was about 4 dollars because it would exceed my budget. I then applied two coats of Rustoleum in black lacquer about 20 minutes apart. Finally I sprayed Rustoleum in clear gloss. I only used one coat because the paint had increased the size of the clip about a millimeter and a half.

It seems that the finish may not be necessary because the black lacquer appears to be a finishing agent in itself. Maybe the gloss finish I got can further the strength of the lacquer.

Below is how the job looked like about 2 hrs after the final application. At this point it had already dried to the point of fine handling.

yes the clip is pretty glossy in the pictures but not as glossy as in real life. Although it is glossy it is still far lower profile then a unpainted clip.

Maybe I'll dig this thread up in a few months to show how much the clip wore.

nice spray job!!.........no runs.........sharp looking, im curious to how well the poly protects the paint finish...youll have to keep us posted
