Papaw's 86th Birthday & his knife

My papaw says to always eat a spoonful of peanut butter every day and he takes alka seltzer for anything that ever goes wrong with him. He tried to quit the Beech-Nut once (my nana made him) but after two days he said it was giving him arthritis in his hands.

Before his bday party my uncle was asking him if he'd want a different kind of heat so he wouldn't have to deal with firewood. Papaw fussed and said that walking up and down the hill to the woodpiles and carrying in firewood is what kept him healthy for 86 years and that he doesn't want to be lazy and fat because it will kill you.

He actually wanted the old timer. I don't remember the exact model number but it was a small two blade jack that I got on eBay during my "I need to buy every USA made old timer I see" phase.

bennyG, thanks for bringing back some good memories of my Papa and Grandaddy.

Happy birthday to your Papaw and may he have many more. Papaw sounds like quite the character and I bet he'd be great to talk with in person.

My Papa and Grandaddy sound a lot like him. I've a suggestion for you if you want to get Papaw a new knife. I'm not sure how often you get the one he has from him for cleaning up a little but next time you have it for cleaning just keep the old one. Give him the new one with a comment like 'Papaw, that old knife sure cleaned up good this time'. Sneaky maybe but who knows maybe it'll work.

Thanks for sharing Benny.

Both of my Grandfathers passed on years ago and I still miss them very much. I've got their knives though, and feel a strong connection to them when I pick them up.

My dad has been thoughtful enough to trade off his EDC slip joints about ever 20yrs or so, so my brother and I will have some heirlooms to cherish some day when he also passes on.

The classic, timeless, "traditionalness" of slip joints is something very special. And IMO it shares that honor with a fairly short list of other tools, toys, and implements.
