Hello all! I just ordered me a BRKT Gunny in Black Paper Micarta with Red Liners and a Black Sheath. I'm sure I will be pleased with this knife. I own four Barkies. Three in Bamboo and one in Antique Ivory Micarta. I'm just wondering what the differance is between "Paper" Micarta and "Canvas" Micarta?? Just as tuff? Smooth vs. ruff?? Ya'll know what I'm getting at. Any and all are welcome to comment! I know Mr.Mike will back his handles. Just make me feel good about me choice!! :) This knife is intended to be an EDC fixed blade. (Land surveyour here. Not the guy on the side of the road. I'm the guy in the woods, swamp, construction site, boat, ....) Thank You Much, Matt

Paper micarta is a little heavier and is able to take a high shine. Canvas - lighter and is typically a rougher finish.

You will be FINE with paper.

As they come from Bark River you won’t notice much difference.

The Canvas has more texture, and over time, as you wear off the buffed finish, you can tell the difference.

The paper always looks a bit more classy to me, but I do like the canvas on a hard working knife; they both will serve you well.

it hasn't been announced yet, but this is a special combo.

There is a special touch to the sheath--it has a red stripe down the sheath. So you take a black paper handle with red liners and a red liner on the sheath....a perfect combo.

Paper and canvas obviously look and feel different. Both are very durable but canvas is a little more durable and tougher

Micarta is just some material compressed and suspended in a resin. As above, one would expect canvas [or cut up demin or cut up combat jacket .etc. like the hobby makers often create] to be stronger. As you work it you expose fibers of the the layer below. Grind and sand all you like but you will be limited by how open weave the material it has been made from is. Hence canvas being strong but but also more open textured and affording better grip. By contrast paper can be taken down very smooth, pretty much to the feel of MDF [which I regard as a kind of paper]. A close grain like that buffed out takes a very fine finish, hence the 'ivory', but it is much more slippery.

I would opt for canvas over paper, better grip retention.I do own knives with paper micarta handles though and have'nt been disappointed with them.

I like em both. Your combo with the gunny sounds nice! Cant wait to see that bad boy!

Canvas is my preferance, more depth to the looks, and a bit grippier. However, paper is pure class IMO.

I agree with J 100% :D Can't go wrong with either

A good person to ask about paper micarta would be Kevin Estela. I know he has several knives with it.
I prefer linen. I like the look of it better plus it gets tacky when wet with water or blood. I'm sure the other micartas do the same but linen has more eye appeal to me.

Sanded smooth but not polished, linen and paper micarta can feel tacky to the touch. Bead blast it and it takes on even more of a tacky almost wet/dry sandpaper feel. Very cool material that is almost bombproof! Very strong and will outlast most natural materials in every respect.
