paper slicing video

I have a feeling that everyone is wrong and you sharpened it on a brick or something like that lol.

It was a second guess so give it to the next closest guess please. And very good job on sharpening with that file it is going through that paper like nothing.

I was thinking that would be donny bee with the carbide sharpener guess, that would be the closest in operation to the file. Not dependent on an abrasive particle size, but a sharp, hard (mostly) metallic item scraping metal away.

I have more than one of these (bought a small bundle on ebay to play with) I could send each of you one if ya want, a second guess really doesn't phase me, though I suppose I should have put more detail in the original post.

The contest was really secondary, I just wanted to do a couple other things - get a feel for what people thought they were looking at in a video of plain old paper being sliced, and to also actually show them what they were seeing, and that it isn't necessarily a high level of polish and/or sharpness.

*edit* a file? Neat ;). Had some 40 grit I sharpen my trust SAK on... slices and, oddly enough, push-cuts very well once with ~3 passes on a med.grit sharpmaker stone.

That said, it's ugly as hell and the edge bevel is huge.

Yeah I agree Donny B should be the winner. How does that file edge work out in the kitchen on food prep? I'm guessing better than most would think.

Good job on the sharpening. It just goes to show you that you can get what most people consider a sharp edge with really coarse grits. I saw the professional sharpener at the local knife store try to impress me with the paper slicing demo you did in the video and I was thinking to myself how even my knives straight off my XX Coarse stone could do that easily. When you spend the time to form the edge correctly you can still get a finish that shaves (even if a bit rough) and goes through paper easily. I always try to squeeze every bit of sharpness out of every grit I use, and getting the edge sharp with the lower grits has helped my finished product a lot.

I'll get the knife to donny when he checks this thread again, just post your email, Mr. bee :) Please do it before Saturday, as I have to head out for some good old Army training for the next five months.

I'll also try to get a newsprint video up with another knife. I may do one with a filed edge again, and something finer, maybe 220/240 or 400/500 grit.

here's newsprint with a filed edge

and a 240 grit (fine crystolon)

For some reason, camera wasn't writing to the memory stick, so the file video stopped at 43 seconds, though I was almost done anyway.

As for the 240 edge, you can see that I had a couple problems. The edge wasn't that great, the primary grinds aren't the most precise and affect the sharpening. I cleaned up what I could, adjusting the angle to take out persistent burrs in areas where the stone wasn't cutting at the very edge on one side.

With a different knife/heavy reprofile, and lots more pages to practice on, I think a deceptive video could be shot. The telltale is the sound of the paper as it is sliced.

Speaking of sound, please ignore my girlfriend in the background :p
