Paperwheel and edge pro pro and cons

I use paper wheels and love them. The only real downside is that they aren't portable the way mine are set up. I used an old dryer motor that is strapped to the bench. I have to go out to the garage if I want to sharpen. With an edge pro I could use it on the coffee table while I watch TV if I wanted.

i have a portable setup that fits in a returnable beer bottle case. i have a 1/2 hp motor mounted to a board that fits inside the case along with a set of wheels. i can take it anywhere i need to.

I guess all I was trying to say is both a belt grinder and a bench grinder with a paper wheel are both free hand grinding, and the motion is very simular. I don't know what the speed of your grinder is but my cheap HF belt sander seems a touch slower than the stone on my bench grinder is. I'm just not sure the paper wheel is going to be much different for you than a high grit belt or a lether belt on your belt grinder. I personally think even ground edges just take a little time and care even with a jig or some kind of system. Putting an even edge on a unsharpened knife can be difficult. Considring what you already have I'd suggest roughing in your edges with the belt grinder. Even them up with a DMT clamp and coarse hone, then finish the edge with what ever you use to just sharpen with now. Maybe a paper wheel would be a good final step if you go that way.

I just checked my HF grinder/buffer and it has a 5/8"arbor. On the grizzly website they have it only in 1/2" I guess I need to order a grinder too.

grizzly doesnt make the wheels. when you get a set from mike just tell him what size arbor you need. dave will be selling the wheels soon to members and i'm sure he'll have the wheels in both 1/2" and 5/8" arbor holes. he might even have them cheaper for forum members possibly but i'm not sure.

Funny you should say that. I want to unbolt my grinder, and transport this to my dad's house today to sharpen his and my brother's knives. They are not as into it as I am but dad has carried a pocket knife for probably for over 50 yrs. of his life. My brother likes tactical serrated, I am a slippie non serrated carrier. I have to be me! Happy Father's Day!
