Para 2 Maxamet?

Was cutting points onto stakes for the garden, cut in and twisted it to pry the bit of wood off.
Done that before with other Para 2's, no prob.
I was surprised how little pressure it took to snap.
Definitely not meant to be bent. Lesson learned.

My next Maxamet Para2 will be purely a cutting tool, as it's intended to be.

Dang. That sucks. I bet if you sent it to spyderco, they might warranty that. They’re probably curious to see it up close as well.

I sent it to Spyderco, with a note on how it broke. Didn't contact them first, just mailed it.
I asked for nothing except they look at it, and expected nothing more from them.

I got an email back, it was inspected, no fault was found with the blade steel - it was my own doing that broke it.

Then they offered me a Spyderco of my choice to the same value!:)
Spyderco rocks.

"Your knife has arrived and has been evaluated, no flaws were found in the steel and the break looks to be consistent with too much side pressure. Maxamet steel is much harder than some of our other steels. While Maxamet holds a great edge it is less forgiving when it comes to twisting or side pressure cuts. Although it wasn’t determined to be a warranty issue and we cannot replace the blade in your knife we will offer you the full MSRP value of your knife to be used towards the different Spyderco product."

Dang! Its like there was a Rock that had a baby with some steel and out popped Maxamet. Definitely not meant to bend in any way.

Glad that Spyderco had your back.
HEY at least you still have Maxamet gray g10 on the forum knife:D:thumbsup:

Sucks they couldn't repair it, but awesome way to make amends! Good choice for the replacement!

That’s awesome they did that! I think it’s fair to say that Maxamet really isn’t a practical blade steel, you can phenomenal wear resistance still from other steels without the drawbacks of the breakage risk and corrosion issues.

For straight up cutting, it’s hard to beat ZDP and S110V.

So far maxamet has stood up to everything, it is not that hard to sharpen either. Sharpened on DMT's and a spyderco ultra fine. Have not had any chipping or warping. I have even given it to some people at work to use, they did not snap it so that's a good test in my eyes. Cant wait for the para 2, the manix is just not as good for me.

Was the warping of maxamet done during the heat treat? Were some sold and evaded QC prior to the problem being recognized?

Just curious.

You would have to ask spyderco about that. But I would assume it happened in ht and that qc missed it.

After that pic and Spyderco saying no fault found in the blade steel I honestly have no desire for one. Unless Cursum was carving his garden stakes out of ebony or lingnum vitae or whatnot.

Might as well be a ceramic blade. PM2 is my favorite folder ever. But I don't care if Maxamet never needs sharpening ever if it's that fragile. Might as well use brine quenched, untempered O1 if it's going to break like that. It's not a knife if that's normal, it's a glorified box cutter.

Impressed with Spyderco's response, though.

So, how many epic fails of Maxamet are we talking about ? One PM2 that I've seen the pic of reference ( sorry Cursum) no judgement. Liked the remedy as well!
I understand that it is like a ceramic, but are Native 5 and or Manix 2's known to have any snapped blade's? I'm planning on getting a user PM2 Maxamet from the next run available, probably use my beater S110V in the garden though.

It's a good point re "how many Maxamet breaks really seen?" Although there really aren't that many PM2s) in the wild, and I would wager even less being actually used. I'll bet the meatier blades hold up better.

To me it doesn't matter, I've seen that pic. And Spyderco saying the steel looked fine, just calling it a harder steel than others. I would be constantly worried using it like a pocket knife. I don't need to pay a premium for worry. But I'm not a collector, and the collectability will undoubtedly be very high.

Would make a lot more sense to laminate over maxamet than s90v! At least all you're worrying about is edge chipping and I'd bet the heat treat would be more stable. But imagine the cost.

Do they have complementary heat-treat
protocols?

I have one of those PM2s that sees use. Mine also has no observable curve in the blade. And while I don't use it very hard (that is more due to how I use a knife rather than fear of using it hard), I have experienced no chipping and obviously no breakage. The broken PM2 above could be an anomaly. Or maybe mine is.

My wife bought me a Manix 2 in Maxamet for Christmas of 2016 and I've had it ever since. I too, ended up breaking the blade cutting through some conveyor belt at work. There I was holding the handle in my hand, with the blade still stuck between in the conveyor belt. Sent it back to Spyderco and they told me the same thing as Cursum, that there was some side load applied to the knife. They sent me a new one and I just keep it in my drawer now. I found it no more difficult to sharpen than any other hard steel out there, but that break has me grabbing other knives from my collection now. I treated that knife no different than my other Spydercos with other steels.

Don't let one picture make you miss out on a knife steel in a class of its own, which may disappear and its kind never be seen again, due to influence of opinions like yours.

I use mine moderately all the time. Most here call it abusive. The blade is extremely hard and will chip with enough force, but less so than a couple of more popular steels on this forum, one closely related to one you mentioned... my 1st hand experience.

Here's another picture. It proves nothing other than dirty and intact, you'll just have to take my word for the way it's used.
