Para 2, need's to be rebeveled...

My diamond rods showed up yesterday, between last night and this morning I spent some time and I think I'm go to go.
As I mentioned, the right side from the belly forward was where the bevel faded, I spent more time there to start with
then worked both sides a bit with the diamonds up through ultra fine's at 30 degrees using a sharpie to check along the way,
then used fine's and ultras at 40.
It shaves and slices, I'll have to see how it holds up though.
What the ***!.... now I'm think'in I should pick up a strop....
I've been screwing around with this stuff since I was a kid, I guess it just doesn't end.

Im admittedly biased, but my opinion is that anyone interested in knives should learn to sharpen them, and keep em that way. If a guy cant be bothered to maintain the functionality of a high end [anything], then why own it?

I like the freedom freehand sharpening skills provide. Steep learning curve, but the end result is the ability to maintain any edged implement you will ever own. May as well get started. Do a bit of research on here for tips and fundamentals. I would recommend diamond or ceramic abrasives, as they last a long time and cut quickly, minimizing consistency error with angles, especially when learning. Plus makes quick work of wear resistant modern steels. I would also recommend practicing on a knife youre willing to wear out or screw up until youre confident. Not a POS gas station special, but something with at least decent steel to provide feedback.

Good luck.

Bleh.

A little slow on the uptake. Rookie move, replying after only reading the first few posts. Didnt notice your progress til i entered my soliloquy. Sorry. Figured id leave it there tho since i spent the time to type it.

Good luck with your setup. Get or make that strop. Youre on the right track.

Some truck stops will have a guy that sharpens knives for about $5 using cardboard wheels. Leaves a nice polished convex edge. Just be sure it's not some yahoo with a grinder and you should be fine.

Some truck stops have guys willing to do other things for $5 too...

stropman.com makes the best damn strops money can buy. I have #61 Big Boy with Black-White-Green compound on rough leather and Red compound on smooth leather. He even burnt my initials in to the handle per request :)

Big Boy is overkill but you can't go wrong with any of his strops and compounds!
