Para 2 problem and a new EDC :(

Well I recently purchased a Para 2 Camo G10. When I first got it, it opens Smoothly and lock up solidly. But for about an hour playing with it, I found out it has some side to side play, and the lock up is not really early (50%) and it's getting sticky when I disengage it. So I decided to ajust the pivot screw and the stop pin screw. After that, It locks up early and solidly, yet still sticky. But if I ajust the pivot screw to the point that it has no blade play, it'll be really, really hard to open the knife out, especially when I thumb-flick it. Does anyone here have the same problem and know how to fix it?

Oh and btw, I'm getting a new folder as an EDC gift, about $150 or under, Spyderco is preferablde. I would like to know what you guys think. Thanks guy, any input is apreciated!

The compression lock up should not be "rated" by the same criteria as one would use for a frame lock or a liner lock. They are not the same thing mechanically. As long as the locking tab is securely on the tang, everything is how it should be. I have a few Paras myself and thwt is the way they all are.

Go easy on the lube, it will eventually attract more dirt and other junk, making it worse.

Yeah don`t use too much lube. That is where the design could improve imo. Washers with small holes in them like the Umnumzaan has, for holding lube and relubing. And yes the compression lock is vastly diffrent than a liner lock. It`s not just a liner lock that`s on the spine of the knife.

I thought the same thing so I didn't lube it :( But the main thing is that I cannot get rid of the side-to-side play on my para2.
And I've never had a regular Millie b4, so can I have any clue how early this knife locks up and how the lock wears under normal use? (no flicking)

In my experience a little side to side wiggle is normal on the Para 2. I have 3 of them and they all wiggle/flex a little. It still locks up perfectly and I feel safe using them.

i own 4 of them and have no wiggle so it's up to you if it bothers you that much send it back for a new one.

Don't worry about flicking open you're Spyderco.It will not harm you're knife.:thumbup::)

Side to side play is a gray area. That depends on how hard the blade is pulled/pushed laterally while open. The best test in my opinion for this is to open the knife, grab the handle in one hand, and the blade. Spine in the other and gently see if there is any wiggle on the blade that can be felt in the handle.

As for the wear on the lock, the oldest Para I have is about 7 years old, and it is still locking up in the same spot since the day I got it. You can rotate the stop pin, and change the position of the lock up slightly. Make sure you tighten both of the pivot screw, and the handle screws. The pivot should allow for some leeway.

I tend not to flick my knives open. Smooth, deliberate action is better for me.

Dang rev you like para 2's?? I got a gray one coming, but if you ever feel the need to get rid of another one hit a brother up lol.

The one on the left has been used really hard, even abused(not by me), the one on the left is my regular edc. I don`t baby my knives, but I don`t usually abuse them. The lock wears on the blade tang, creating a burr, and that burr, and some other factors, is what makes the lock sticky. I`m not gonna say I`m the end all expert for Para 2s, but I`ve talked to sal and others at Spyderco about the lock and the mechanics of the knife, since this is something that interests me a lot. Side to side is unusual, but minimal play is normal, up and down due to the wear of the lock, and removing of the burr on the lock is to be expected. The left knife locks up solid, and the blade play of the left one doesn`t affect the performance, or the strengh of the lock.

Its not my pic, and its an original gen para, but it should get plastered all over the knife forums until everyone with a comp lock gets why blade play doesn't much matter with this lock design. But the para2 play is mostly due to the pivot bushing.

If anyone knows who actually owners that picture please let me know so I can give credit where its due.

Well...I have to be honest, I'm a lil bit picky about knives. So I end up selling it to a guy in town for $100. Now I'm thinkin' about getting a new Spydie. I'm a lil short on money right now, so...with about $150-180 what should guys gonna buy?

(I've been thinkin' about re-purchase a para2, cuz it's soooo sweet but I hesitate that I'll be just like the old one)

I always kept my Paramilitary very tight to be 100% solid and used the Spydie-drop to open it.

What type of cutting do you do and how much do you do on a regular basis? It's hard to move on from the model because the size, design of the handle and blade, G10 texture, etc. are rather awesome.

Can't say it will work the same cutting for you or feel as good for you in hand but CS Tri-AD folders are probably the least vulnerable to blade play and can be nice and flickable while 100% solid. Lots of Benchmade fans say similar about Axis folders but I don't think its on the same level as in all the screws can be out of the knife and you still have 100% solid lock up with no blade play evident.

It's an option besides getting another Paramilitary 2 and let it wear in to better "flickability" while keeping it nice and tight.

I use a folder for very light work, say, like food prep, letter opening, box open, cardboard cutting...No abuse at all. Actually I baby my folder and use it only to cut things, not to chop or to hack, pry with it. And my para is just 1 week old. I guess the blade play came from the dealer, when I first got it, the jimping on the thumb ram has 1 tooth broken and the lock-up is about 55%. Guess it's a used one or 's been playing quiet alot at the shop.

I love the Para 2 but if I were to chose another model in the $180 range it would be this one.
