Hey guys I'm about to purchase my first paramilitary 2. I can't decide which blade to go with black or satin. Any help and your experiences with both would help. I usually get uncoated blades but I like the look of the black and I was curious if it provided any corrosion resistance. Thanks for any help guys.

The blade is s30v stainless steel. No extra corrosion resistance need. I just got the military, satin blade black g10. Blade coatings all eventually show signs of wear.

It's stain"LESS." It'll still rust with my toxic sweat (I've had s30v on my EDC rust before).

I prefer the DLC specifically for the added corrosion resistance. The area I normally have rust on an EDC is in the pivot area. No worries about that with a DLC coated blade.

Spyderco's DLC coated blades are extremely robust as far as coatings go. But it is just a coating, and if used and abused enough, it will wear away. Personally, I like the look of a coated blade that has good honest wear on it.

The DLC does add some additional protection - corrosion, scratches, wear, etc.

But it does wear off with usage but not easily. It's tough stuff.

Go with the version YOU like - they're all good.

I have both and prefer the looks of the coated blade. Looks real sweet!!
I also use both.....not to demo houses....the Spydie coating wears exceptionally well! The Late Boy Scout did a hard use review with the coated PM2 including some batoning......coating looked great afterwards.
Carrying the satin blade today and doing a lot of driving.......been flicking that bad boy all day! Really cool knife!
Good luck!

I really love the DLC coatings. They do hold up pretty well. But when I bought my PM2 they were all out of black blades, so I just went with satan...oops, I mean satin. :) But it's only been in my pocket for a few weeks now. I'm not around water to any extent, but I haven't had any issues with raw s30v on any past blades.

I've had coated blades in the past and in my experience they slow down the action. Is this the case with the pm2?

I despise coated blades, but that's just me.

You don't need the coating, but if you think it looks tacticool get it.
Some like the look, and not a thing wrong with that.

The blade is S30V, so unless there is some serious neglect, use in salt water, or constant high humidity, corrosion should not be an issue.

The DLC coating on the PM2 is very tough, and it will take a lot of use to show any real signs of wear.

As for the action, I never noticed a difference. Some PM2's have better action out of the box then others, but I can't say that is related to the coating.

If you like the look (I love it, especially with matching black handles) then go for it...

DLC itself does not help with corrosion

I have owned several of both blades and I keep going back to the satin one. Also if you are going to customize it, I found the satin blade works better with more types of customization. You probably will find yourself trying both of them

This is very interesting and I appreciate information.

Could you also speak to DLC as a relates to helping rust resistance?

NONE/ZERO/ZIP of the Family of Vacuum Deposited Coatings ARE GOOD Corrosion Barriers, That being said, these coatings can’t rust because these is no presents of Iron/Ferrite in the coating itself.. It’s a coating only 2-4 Microns in thickness with microscopic pin holes, corrosion can start there and on the cutting edge migrating under the coating causing rust…

The Benefit of coatings for corrosion is they absorb oil like a sponge, Maintain your knife, rinse it off from time to time and reapply a coat of oil, wipe dry and you’ll have Great Corrosion Protection…

We all want a knife that, Won't Rust, Light Weight, Stays Sharp forever, with the latest materials.. It doesn't exist, But were working on it... almost forgot.. For Under $100.00 Made in the USA...

Everything I have ever read on DLC indicates that while corrosion resistance is not the main function of the coating, it does improve corrosion resistance...

I can paste a million links here, both studies, and from application guides.

Two factors here that may effect that:

DLC is a generic term, and many Carbon coatings fall under the "DLC" category.

I guess if there is a part of the blade that is exposed (the edge) then that could compromise the effectiveness of the coating.

In case anyone cares, the main use of DLC coatings is for anti friction/anti wear..

I don't know how in PM2 but in my Spyderco Street Bowie, coating caught scent of the food and it was hard to remove, for example onions scent. So, it's why I've removed coating.
