Para 2 upgraded?

Hey 5.56, you have some great pics of my knife....as I am and have been the owner of #016 for a little while now :D

It's in good hands and is waiting for it's first real use on duty, but has been a perfect EDC and user around the house

When was the R&D done on the Para 2? Where the mods debated and discussed on the forums? The reason I ask is that I sent a Para 1 in about 2 years ago for minor work. That knife had many of the mods found on the Para 2 done by me with a bench grinder and Dremel.

This is an informative thread. Out of curiosity I looked at the one I just received last week and it appears to be one of the first gen knives based on the lock tab position. I wonder if the people I ordered it from sent me a returned knife? Not sure what to think about that.....

How's compression lock compared to ball bearing lock?

this may help:

I don't think Spyderco discusses any of their modifications on the forums as it is a continuous improvement process. I'm sure they did look at many of the 'complaints' when doing the redesign such as the exposed blade tang. Out of curiosity, what did you do to your knife? I can't see many of the improvements from 1 to 2 being able to be done other than handle shape refinement.

Sleeper7, you might want to take this up with Sal directly via e-mail rather than with people who can't give you and don't have the information you are looking for. Sal's certainly not difficult to get a hold of.

I re-profiled the blade tang, re-profiled the handle, and added jimping. It's not that big a deal. I was just curious if my mods had any part in the changes on the Para 2.

Pardon my possibly bad eyes, but is it just the tab that has changed, or did the relief cuts in the scales get changed also?

One complaint I had with the Para2 was that the lock couldn't be depressed in the closed position to allow for blade deployment. The original
Para could be opened and closed simply by depressing the lock and wrist flicking the knife.

It would appear in the picture above that the new refinement allows for the the lock to be depressed in the closed position. The top knife has no gap between the scale, and the bottom CF one has the gap. Is this true?

Comparing a 1st gen S30V Para2 with the sprint S90V version, the relief cut in the scale seems to be the same. What is interesting is the tab is moved forward on the S90V and the entire lockbar is cut differently. I would take them apart and snap a pic, but the movement on my S90V is so perfect I don't want to mess with it.

Yes, the lockbar is cut away from the scale, and it also has less of a cut out at the 'bottom'. I'm describing that terribly. Anyone volunteer to snap a pic? :)

You can just see it in this pic that brj posted:

Look at the liner towards the top of the pic on both knifes. In the Gen 1 it is cut out, in the S90V Sprint it is solid, all the way to the rest of the liner.

Mapper66, can you depress the lockbar in the closed position, allowing the blade to swing freely?

That was how it looked to me from the other side of the 'net. ;)

I just checked my Para 2, which I believe is a first gen one. Even though the lock bar appears to not have any give in the closed position, if I press on the tab I can flick the blade open. With a little lube or maybe a slight loosening of the pivot I believe the blade might swing freely. Mine is just a little stiff outta the box.
