Para 2, which color combo?

Stainless is only called that because it has over 13% chromium. It still has the tendency to stain.

No. Stainless steels don't have a "tendency to stain." They are rust resistant,
but they are not "rust-proof." Big difference between "not rust proof" and "tendency to stain."

Coating on a stainless blade (especially a folder) is a design element only.

Well, I guess it does reduce the reflections from your blade that might give your position away to the enemy when you are stranded deep behind enemy lines saving the world for democracy, mom, and apple pie.

I found this post from the Spyderco Factory Forums. From no less than TazKristi.

Sir, obviously everyone has different experiences, but i spend allot of time in the swamp deep down here in the south and sweat and i mean when i come back i am wet head to toe like i jumped in the river, from sweat and obviously the lower half of me from the swamp water. when i go out i spend all day...not a 2 hour walk around. so i rust spot knives easily, regardless of oil used to coat. sweat enough, get wet enough and that oil will wear away on a folding knife in a pocket rubbing against pants material.

maybe it's my battery acid like sweat, maybe it's the chemicals in the sulfur springs areas, maybe the highly acidic soil in the dry spots, maybe the swamp gas? what do i know, but i can tell you blade coatings stop rust for me. i can make aus8 satin or polished finish and it will rust spot, s30v easily regardless of finish, many other steels as well, and any stainless steel bead blasted. h1 won't rust spot, and i don't treat mine in any ways with a protectant and they never rust spot.

point is, some like coatings for the "special forces/ninja/karate master/street assasin" perceived by some look....but there is some rust protection. it may not be the main point of the coating on a folder, but it does serve as a protectant for rust spotting.

ironically i prefer uncoated blades as i like the look of steel, but those knives don't come out into the swamp with me unless i coat them in marine tuf cloth...i've had good luck with that on stopping rust spotting. of course i use my h1's allot and never have an issue.

as my original post mentioned, i'll do it again differently and in detail......if you've never had an issue with rust spotting it's a non-issue for you. your sweat ain't salty enough to harm it, you don't spend enough time sweating, your environment isn't so acidic, whatever. if you have rust spotted knives, it's a nice option to have. it's not just for design......

I have no doubt you can make stainless steels rust spot. That's exactly what I said in my post. Stainless steels are not-rust proof....they are rust-resistant.

Making stainless steels rust spot while spending all day in the sulphur swamp sweating on them is not a result of stainless steel's "tendency to stain." Its a result of spending all day in the sulphur swamp sweating on them.

I need a black blade for my covert deanimations at the mall. ;)

Does DLC really inhibit rust? I read somewhere that it for "light discipline".

Am I the only one who took the meaning of "light discipline" the entirely wrong way?

I did figure it out though. Nothing to do with a little playful spanking. :o

Sir, this response above quoted...you missed what i was addressing from your comment. you said and i quote...."Coating on a stainless blade (especially a folder) is a design element only."

that is a pretty firm statement, implying directly that blade coatings don't add any corrosion protection and i disagree with you on that Sir.

i'm not sure what your point on stainless and staining is? everyone here knows and understands stainless steel...at least i hope so. my original post was that the blade coating was useful if you rust spot knives easily, and if you don't it's a preference thing. you went on to quote me and say the para 2 was made of stainless?...which everyone knows, or so i hope anyways....and while fireant talked staining and such, i didn't. so my answer to your blade coating only for design comment was such. a blade coating does add corrosion protection. now whether one needs it or not is purley subjective. thanks for your follow up.

I've seen rust come right through a DLC coating like it wasn't there. However, the rust came off and the coating was still perfect underneath. Very strange as I thought the coating would have come off with the rust.

There also have been some blades tested and the black coated ones had softer steel than the uncoated version. If the DLC has to be baked on that could temper the blade softer. A softer blade might not perform as well as a harder one, at least in terms of edge holding.

My "fav." knife of them all is the Para2 and as far as I know I have all of them with 2 black bladed ones and have had no trouble with spotting or rust as I clean mine as soon as I come back from wherever I have been. Number one is the Para2 and then the Endura and my 3rd choice is the Manix2. All good knives that you can depend on. My .05 worth.*!

Perhaps, sir, you lost track of the fact that, originally, I was responding to FireAnt's claim that stainless steel has a tendency to stain.

Can it be made to stain? Yes. Does it have a tendency to stain? No. Stainless steel can be made to melt too. Does it have a tendency to melt? No.

That said, I will give you that if one hangs out, sweating and waist deep in a sulphurous swamp, then coating on a stainless steel folder might be a worthwhile thing to have. (If that coating actually does, in fact, provide some extra rust resistance...and it seems there have been several claims in this thread that it doesn't.)

If one is not there...I stand by my claim that the coating is purely a design element.

I carry and use my Para 2 in S90V at work, my normal EDC is a CR ZAAN.

The average blade coating does probably provide some sort of protection against rust as it is a barrier against the elements (and oxygen). The DLC is the only coating that I know of that will allow rust to go right through it. However, a coating doesn't protect the important part of a knife which is the edge. If the edge gets corrosion on it, it will kill it and make it dull. So it is mainly for looks as staining of the blade is a cosmetic issue and not a performance issue.
