I am wondering why people wrap their knives. I am kinda new to the whole survival scene....is it just to have the cord available or do you guys really like to use the knives with the cord?

Well, some knives are skeletonized - i.e. they have no handle scales - so the cord wrap serves as a "handle". A good example was the very popular Becker Necker.
Also, you do have the paracord...

I like it either way with the one knife that I've wrapped. It feels good in the hand with the cord wrap and it's OK without. For the most part though, it's to have the cordage on hand. I am going to wrap the sheath with several feet of duct tape, a couple of wide ranger bands, tuck some hooks and tinder into one of the bands and a BSA Hotspark into the other. Making up a minimal kit of sorts.

The cords always handy but me and my son just like the way it feel and how it fills out the handle a little !!!

I think they provide me a better grip when using them for tactical purposes. Every one has different hands and the feel of a cord wrapped knife may feel different for someone else.

i do like cord-wrapped handles on knives, it gives the knife a bit more grip and adds a little more cushion for extended use... however, i wouldn't use a cord-wrapped handled knife to do any gutting and/or field dressing of any fish or game...... it will get mighty stinky FAST....

Well I guess one advantage of the cord wrap would be that you could unwrap the cord and clean it or just use new cord to rewrap.

I think a cord wrap is handy, but there is always natural rope that you can make from dead poplar if you need something to wrap a bare steel handle when stuck in the woods. A cord wrapped handle can be easily damaged as well.

I am into it for aesthetics, But after hearing all these great points I might have to Change my mind.

There are so many different ways to cordwrap a handle that some may be simply for better grip and some for availability of the cord. Why did the Japanese use cloth wrappings?
