Are there different types of para cord? What type does RAT use? Do stores sell this stuff? How strong is it? Is it hard to cut?

Sorry for all the questions

there are different kinds with different number of inner strands,

The most common one is 7 strand 550 cord,
It isn't really hard to cut but can withstand 550 pounds before breacking
This is also the cord Rat gives with some of their knives, some stores sell it, I usually get mine on the Bay

The para cord you see most offen is 550 7 strand. You can get it in a lot of different colors and lengths. Usually it's sold in 25, 50, 100 foot lengths, they also sell it in bulk lengths on a spool. Just search para cord and you'll come up with a bunch of places to purchase it.

I would check out Supply Captain (google them). They have lots of colors and pretty good prices. Going to be picking some up soon.

There is true paracord and there is cheap cord. The thing to look for is the inner strands. Don't confuse this with the cheap stuff they sell at the big box stores as "utility cord". Paracord is very strong (generally 550 lbs tensile strength hence the name "550 cord") and is easy to cut with a sharp knife.

Here is a pic from GoingGear showing the inner strands. I've bought cord there as well. Very good service. This cord has 8 inner strands, but the standard 7 strand is perfectly fine and for lighter uses the 5 inner strand will work. I prefer 7, but have used them all.

paracord is highly useful, i use it all the time! 7 strand 550 cord is the
easiest to get a hold of!

Try to buy it from a reputable place as there's also fake 7 strand 550 that looks just like the real thing but isn't rated for strength. If it matters to you.

Most of the neon/cool colors I've found are actually 4 strand 450 cord. I've had no issue using it. I do keep a 1200' spool of commerical grade 550 around. Haven't really been motivated to track down and verify mil stuff. I don't use it for anything that crazy. Sterling accessory cord is also very good, and quite useful.

does anybody know of a supplier of coloured para cord in canada?
county com doesn't ship up here.

hi, i usually buy mine at the clothing sales store on base but you can also get it at alot of army surplus stores, brigade quartermasters online carries it too.

good luck

what are good knots to use when using para cord... like if you were to bond 2 sticks adjacent to each other? the basic knot just doesnt hold.

I just verified this with my most recent purchase. I picked up some bright pink and neon yellow/green for handles and rain flys. Both of these are 4 strand. This isn't a problem for these applications however.

Haven't experienced that yet. I have some neon green para cord right here with 7 strands. Where did you order from and have you ordered other colors from the same place? Not sure if it just varies due to the store and what they stock or colors in general.
