This will be my carry when day hiking in wilderness areas. They are both S30V. I like the lightness of the Para. I like the longer blade and lock of the Manix2. I spoke to Spyderco and both handles are both about the same thickness.

I will be ordering on-line and will not have had the opportunity to handle either one.

Why would you pick one vs the other?

I prefer the paramilitary 2 the knife gets so much love on here and the knife has a great edge, to describe the feeling of the knife it feels so smooth when it locks it's a great knife

Another vote for the Para 2. It really is "that good". Disappears into your pocket, until you need it. Hard to find a better EDC in my opinion.

I think you can't go wrong with the para2, and for hiking and outdoors the weight is nice. The reality is, if you really are one of us you will end up with both anyways :D

Only thing I don't understand on the Manix XL is the 1/8th inch blade thickness. If it's XL, go with a 5/32" thickness.

I'd probably go with the Manix2 XL, just because of size.

Either way I don't believe you can go wrong.

As a edc knife, I prefer Para-Military 2,it`s light to carry, if in the wild,I like to carry manix 2 xl. I like both of them, maybe I wodld carry both of them.

i say both, but then again i have 2 XL's coming with hope for sprints and 10 para 2's in my possession with 2 m390s incoming as well as awaiting preordering the green, orange, and brown in duplicates LOL

I have a few Para2's, but I didn't bother with the manix2 XL because I have a 1st-Gen Manix already.

Get the manix, it's a stronger blade that will be better for woods related stuff like carving a tent stake or starting a fire. I love the para2 but the tip is very thin an I just don't trust it for heavier work that you might encounter on a hike. It's a better EDC though due to it's near weightlessness and thin body.

I'm not sure there are many XL's on the market that haven't already been snapped up. It may be awhile before production meets demand and they are widely available.

Para 2's should be easy to find, and they are great knives.

The tip on the Manix 2 XL is just as thin as the Para if just a hair thicker

From a defense point of view (there are mountain lions where I hike) does the Manix make sense for piercing since it has such a broad blade?
And please, let's not start a debate about whether a small knife is a real defense against a mountain lion, it makes me feel more secure hiking alone, often after dark. I am aware how a fixed blade is more appropriate and there are times it is more appropriate for me to have a folder.

If you are hiking alone and want real defense against a mountain lion you would be better protected with a 357 revolver or 45 automatic. I guess a pocket knife would be better than nothing.
