Para-Military 2 or Manix2 XL - Which to get?

If you are hiking alone and want real defense against a mountain lion you would be better protected with a .357 revolver or 45 automatic. I guess a pocket knife would be better than nothing.

That! ^

There isn't much No. American big game that a .357 mag with a jacketed soft point won't put down. "I" don't like carrying a pistol that's not comfortable to fire such as .44 mags & above to trust for excelent marksmanship. As far as the venerable .45 acp, it doesn't do well on larger game, not even in the same league as a .357 mag IMO. Plus I'd dump the the folder for a fixed blade like a Ka-Bar (if you're on a budget it's a lot of knife) to stab a large, powerful animal. :)

I understand that a revolver is an option but it is not one that I am pursuing here.
I do have xlnt fixed blades.
There have been a number of occurrences of people fighting off mountain lions with pocket knives. One woman saved her husband by driving his pen into the lions eye in the Redwood National Forest.
So let's get back to the last question of the Manix2 XL blade shape where I can use some help.
Thanks!

This will be my carry when day hiking in wilderness areas. They are both S30V. I like the lightness of the Para. I like the longer blade and lock of the Manix2. I spoke to Spyderco and both handles are both about the same thickness.

I will be ordering on-line and will not have had the opportunity to handle either one.

Why would you pick one vs the other?

Well, since this is kind of a silly thread (IMHO) you might opt for a pen to stab your monutain lion's eye out if you think discussing a firearm is so off topic. Fact is if you're hiking an area that has had attacks or reported menacing reports, you should be prepared to fight like hell or stay away.

Both knives will stab through light skin and flesh quite readily so what's the question really? It depends on which one you fancy. Google both and look at the handle or closed length and match that to your hand to insure a good grip and look at the handles to ascertain which one seems more suited to your likes or dislikes in grip. ~ the blades going in okay ~

I personally edc a Hinderer XM-18, strong fast deployment, able to smash through or off of a rib bone. My other EDC is a Military which is feather light and (mine) takes a hair splitting edge. Fast in the hand in any grip and long blade.

I'd say get a Military but if you're married to these two then I vote for the Para 2 for it's nice lock which when broken in flicks open readily, has a needle sharp tip, strong blade with a good belly.

Pepper spray will probably serve you much better if you pack a decent size canister and can deploy at a distance of 20 to 30 ft and will keep you out of close contact. Animals with highly developed sense HATE the stuff!

YEah the blades are way too similar to say one is better than the other in a hectic survival scenario like that. Positive grip is much more important.

And since when is carving tent poles "hard use"???

From a defense point of view (there are mountain lions where I hike) does the Manix make sense for piercing since it has such a broad blade?
And please, let's not start a debate about whether a small knife is a real defense against a mountain lion, it makes me feel more secure hiking alone, often after dark. I am aware how a fixed blade is more appropriate and there are times it is more appropriate for me to have a folder.

where i live in jersey mountain lions will pick apart small dogs that run off 100 yards from their owner in the woods. they will even attack small baby deer just born near homes. BUT a mountain lion is not dumb. it will not be trying to take down a human w/o warning. if u invade on its young it might defend but honestly i wouldn't worry about it unless you came across a mountain lion larger than a great dain.

if you want woodland mountain lion defense please look into bear pepper spray in the "fire extinguisher" sized canister. or don't walk alone at night in the woods alone often like you describe. the buddy system is a working proven method for a reason lol.

besides have u ever heard of a mountain lion being slain by a small pocket knife in your local area?

On the West Coast there have been a number of human attacks, from southern Cal to Vancouver Island over time. There have been several reports of people fighting off mountain lions with knives.

Depending on the situation, a gun or pepper spray can be the best defense. Mountain lion attacks are often by surprise where these weapons may not be a benefit. I do have bear pepper spray but only carry it when there seems to be significant concerns - like when one of my neighbors had to scare off a black bear coming at him a few times with his revolver on a trail we both hike.

You are correct, walking alone at night is not the safest approach - but I still often do it....

I do not really very worried about getting attacked but am trying to mitigate my reckless approaches a bit and feel safer.

then your question has already been answered here for you. either knife u want will cut through thin mountain lion skin. so buy whichever you like more. i would get a millie 2 but its just my opinion.

I have a reg manix 2 and a para 2 and its tough to pick one over the other. Like coop sez, a manis is really a tuff knife so the xl looks to a bigger version of the same toughness. No wrong choice there. Para is more slender and the manix has all the extra jimping that I personally like.
