I bought a couple snap buckles with a built in whistle to convert the sternum straps on a couple packs over to this new style. I was also looking into making a paracord survival bracelet and came on this web page that gives a good set of instructions on making a paracord bracelet using a snap buckle: http://www.instructables.com/id/EL5S5IADTYEY95S32O . I was blown away by how easy it was to do.

Just use one of these buckles with the whistle:

One source I found was http://www.survivalschool.com/products/survival/whistle_buckle(1).htm

All done, I have a whistle and 8 feet of line. I need to try another with the Brunton watch band compass built in.

They are surprisingly light-- now I have to find the right watch to incorporate into this, then a lighter.... WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END????? :D

Thanks for the link.

Your buckle looks bigger than the one in the tutorial. It looks like the "king cobra" stitch might add more width to fill out your larger buckle.

Good tip. It is a 3/4" buckle, but I pulled the knots tight. I'm sure this is just the beginning. Once you get a couple rows figured out, you can make one of these things in a few minutes. I want to try some multi-colored ones and get by the library and find some good macrame books.

I don't see wearing this all the time, but it would be easy to snap around the shoulder strap on my pack too. When I'm feeling really ambitious, and I have some good weaves down, I'll make belt. At 1" of weave=1' of line, I could carry quite a bit around my waist and it would make a cool looking belt. Uber Rambo, yah?

my mountain smith backpack has a chest strap with one of those buckles on it and i love it

You can just loop the cord around the buckle ends another time when making the bracelet to fill in the space on the wider buckles, so they don't slide around on you ;)

There are more paracord ideas you can try out on my blog page.

Nice site! That went into my Favorites list in a heartbeat.

My son is a CYO camp counselor-- he's going to love the paracord crosses.

Dale-nice rig...haven't seen that before...I wonder if they make a small knife and sheath that would comfortly fit on this type of rig? or on a leather bracer etc...just thinking out loud...

HAH! I just realized that the instruction site I linked to is authored by none other than Stormdrane. DOH!

Thanks a million for sharing the instructions and   on the clear step-by-step. You should do a book.

You have created a monster, Stormdrane. I got by my local surplus store and bought a section of military parachute lines, so now I have a good supply of OD green cord with a black tracer in it. I also found some 5/8" contoured buckles that work perfectly.

I got an Israeli paratrooper bag in a thrift store today and I made a 10" knotted section with 3/4" black Delrin swivel snaps on each end to act as a grab handle on the bag. Works great, looks like it belongs, and I have 10' of line for my "urban PSK."

Woo. This is a little bit old, but Dale, you have any pictures of a finished bracelet with this buckle? I'm about to order some buckles, and was curious what the final product looks like?

Do they seem to be pretty strong buckles? To big? Just curious on your thoughts.

Edit: I found them here for much cheaper: http://www.questoutfitters.com/plastic.htm

I found a listing here: http://www.itwnexus.com/catalog/index.php/dw/op/a/8/c/24/p/76 That says they make them in gray, but I haven't found any yet to buy.

Thanks again for the posts, but I'd like a specific shot of the whistle buckle. Maybe next to a regular bracelet would be cool.

I made some bracelets, but they aren't nearly as clean as the one in the first link :( I got my buckle/whistles at Seattle Fabrics.

Unfourntatly, I think the bracelets are kind of thick to be on my wrist, but they go real well to hang stuff off of packs. I have a bracelet attached to my binocular case all the time.
